Assessing Tonal Abilities in Elementary School Children
The objective of this study was to develop and validate an instrument measuring the perception and interpretation of several distinct musical features (pitch, tonality, timing, loudness, and timbre). Therefore, we developed the Implicit Tonal Ability Test (ITAT), a listening test containing 49 multiple-choice items. A total of 233 children aged 6 to 12 participated in this study. Rasch model-based analysis of dimensionality and differential item …
Responsive curriculum development
To meet society's changing demands, the responsive development of curricula is vital, and curriculum developers need to increasingly foresee and incorporate changes into their curricula in a timely manner. However, responsive curriculum development is a complex problem for curriculum developers in vocational and (higher) professional education, and comprehensive research on this theme is scarce. This study focused on responsive curriculum develop…
About Crows and Nightingales
In this study, we explored associations between perception of musical features (pitch, tonality, timing, timbre, and loudness), vocal abilities (singing accuracy, melodic achievement, and rhythmic performance), and cognitive levels (reading accuracy and comprehension, grammar, and math) among children ages 6 to 12. Musical perception abilities were measured using the Implicit Tonal Ability Test. Vocal abilities were measured using the Vocal Music…
Classroom Management Scripts
Dealing with the complexities of the classroom and the diversity of events in classroom situations presents a major challenge for classroom management. The knowledge a teacher has for processing this complexity depends a great deal on their level of experience, leading to differences in the way teachers perceive and interpret classroom events. This includes how they monitor events and how they maintain an ongoing awareness of classroom situations…
Misconceptions in medicine, their origin and development in education and working life
Conceptual changes for and during working life
Rapid and radical changes in science, technology and society may result in new scientific concepts and new workplace practices, which require fundamental restructuring of prior knowledge. Over the years a noteworthy body of research has documented the processes of conceptual change, the learning mechanisms involved, and the instructional methods and strategies that can promote conceptual changes. This research, however, focused young learners in …
The role of positional knowledge and tonal approaches in cellists’ sight-reading
Sight-reading is an important skill for amateur and professional musicians. Several factors seem to play a role in sight-reading skills, such as expertise level, ear training, mental speed and improvisation skills. If we are right in supposing that these factors cannot easily be generalized for all musicians, one of the reasons for this must surely lie in the fact that different musical instruments set different technical requirements for the pla…

Teacher vision
Visual expertise has been explored in numerous professions, but research on teachers’ vision remains limited. Teachers’ visual expertise is an important professional skill, particularly the ability to simultaneously perceive and interpret classroom situations for effective classroom management. This skill is complex and relies on an awareness of classroom events. Using eye tracking measurements and verbal think aloud, we investigated differences …

Employers' Views on Desirable Theoretical Knowledge Qualities of Newly Qualified Social Workers
This study is a qualitative exploration of Dutch social work employers' views on desirable theoretical knowledge qualities of recently qualified bachelors of social work and how these qualities are weighed in hiring decisions. Participants (n =18) from sixteen social work organisations were interviewed about descriptions of four personas, fictitious but life-like job applicants. These personas were created based on outcomes of earlier investigati…
Keeping an Eye on Learning
Classroom management represents an important skill and knowledge set for achieving student learning gains, but poses a considerable challenge for beginning teachers. Understanding how teachers' cognition and conceptualizations differ between experts and novices is useful for enhancing beginning teachers' expertise development. We created a coding scheme using grounded theory to analyze expert and novice teachers' verbalizations describing classro…
Teachers’ positioning towards an educational innovation in the light of ownership, sense-making and agency
Exploring teachers’ will to learn
The effect of prior knowledge activation on text recall
Two hypotheses, the cognitive set-point and the selective-attention hypothesis, try to account for the facilitation effects of prior knowledge activation. These hypotheses appear to be mutually exclusive since they predict different recall patterns as a result of prior knowledge activation on text recall. However, in experiments supporting these hypotheses different knowledge structures were activated, resulting in different ways of text processi…
Effects of mobilizing prior knowledge on information processing
In this study, three experiments examine the effects of mobilizing prior knowledge on information processing. Subjects generated names of either US presidents or States before studying a relevant list. Study time allocated to different parts of the list and free recall were recorded. In Expt 1, study time was unlimited; no recall differences were found but experimental subjects spent less time studying the material. In Expt 2, total study time wa…
