  • Maternal Role Behavior and Adnrogyny: A Comparison of Divorced and Married Mothers

Rose Maxwell, Rose A Maxwell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Divorce & Remarriage•1996

Divorced mothers were expected to describe their family roles as more dominant, unfriendly, and instrumental than married mothers. Divorced mothers were also expected to describe themselves as androgynous while the married mothers would describe themselves as feminine. One hundred sixty-four mamed mothers and twenty single divorced mothers completed the SYM- LOG (Systematic Multilevel Observation of Groups) behavior rating form and the Bem Sex Ro…

  • Nothing but the Facts—And some Observations on Norms and Values: The History of a Consultation with a Metropolitan Police Division

    Open Access•W Brendan Reddy, Leonard M Lansky•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1975•References: 4

The paper describes a case study of an initial intervention in a large municipal police division. A community group/police confrontation led to the development of an 80‐hour community relations training program for 39 police recruits. The program, designed and conducted by a biracial staff, followed an experience‐based learning format in sharp contrast to the quasi‐military traditional learning format of the police division. Focus is placed on th…

  • Independence, Dependence, Manifest and Latent Masculinity-Femininity: Some Complex Relationships among Four Complex Variables

    Open Access•Leonard M Lansky, Gerald McKay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

It is a common assumption that dependence is associated with femininity and/or being female and that independence or autonomy is associated with masculinity and/or being male. As a test of this assumption, 36 children, 20 boys and 16 girls, of kindergarten age, were rated by their teachers on Beller's scales for dependence (DEP) and independence or autonomous achievement striving (AAS). As a measure of manifest masculinity-femininity, Brown's It …

  • The Effects of Various Design Approaches on Critical Judgment in Handcarving

    Leonard M Lansky, William A Leonard et al.•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1969•References: 1

What teaching strategies help design students to develop critical judgment? What strategies hinder such learning? Is there an ideal strategy for all design students or for identifiable subgroups? These and similar questions are the core issues for the research program we have been pursuing for several years (Lansky and Peterson, 1966, 1968; Peterson and Lansky, 1968). To date, we have focussed our attention on one complex design task-the handcarv…

  • Masculinity, Femininity, and Masculinity-Femininity: A Phenomenological Study of the MF Scale of the MMPI

    Open Access•Jay Y Gonen, Leonard M Lansky•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

College students evaluated responses by a hypothetical man and woman to the MMPI Mf scale's items as making the man or woman “more masculine,” “less masculine,” “more feminine,” and “less feminine.” These four responses were not mutually exclusive; a “no response” option was also provided. The students' evaluations were coded as bipolar or unipolar. When S placed a behavior along a continuum with masculinity at one pole and femininity at the othe…

  • Some Comments on Ward's (1968) “Variance of Sex-Role Preferences among Boys and Girls”

    Open Access•Leonard M Lansky•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

Ward's study (method, data, and interpretation of data) is examined gently

  • Edge-Punched Cards: A Method for Storing and Retrieving Social Science References

    Open Access•Leonard M Lansky, Freda Rebelsky et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

This paper has presented a system which will enable social scientists to classify and store references to professional literature and to accurately, quickly, completely, and economically retrieve the information when it is needed. The procedure for setting up an edge-punched card system is described. The limitations and advantages of this system, compared with other possible systems, are explored

  • Sex Role Preferences of Kindergarten Boys and Girls: Some Contradictory Results

    Open Access•Leonard M Lansky, Gerald McKay•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

A number of researchers have found that girls tend to prefer the masculine role more than boys prefer the feminine, particularly at the kindergarten age. Several such studies have used the It Scale for Children (ITSC) although some more recent work has questioned these researches on methodological grounds, claiming that the IT figure seems to be seen as male by most children. To test this methodological point and the hypothesis that boys today ha…
