East Tennessee Immigration Raid: Perspectives From Community Responders and Service Providers
In 2018, Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted a large-scale workplace raid in East Tennessee. Nearly 100 workers were initially arrested, with 54 being detained out of state. Grief and fear associated with the raid rippled across families and the community. Infrastructures of repression and resistance: How Tennesseans respond to the immigration enforcement regime
This paper addresses challenges faced by immigrants in two Tennessee locales, Nashville and Knoxville, focusing on Latino immigrant communities and the institutions to which they have responded during the period spanning the 2005 passage of the Sensenbrenner Bill and the Trump administration. We examine how the K-12 school system has reacted to draconian legislation and review the ways in which law enforcement affects the lives of immigrants and …
Unequal Protection Under the Law: Encoding Racial Disparities for Hispanics in the Case of Smith v. Georgia
We interrogate the Georgia Supreme Court ruling in the 2002 capital murder trial of Brandon Smith to illustrate how "fair cross section" implementation in Georgia's legal system was used to create case law that institutionalized discrimination against Hispanic participation in the jury process. By paying scrupulous attention to legal precedents specifically intended to widen inclusion under the equal protection clause, the Justices' decision put …
Neighborhood disorder and the sense of personal control: Which factors moderate the association
This study examines whether and how select individual characteristics moderate the relationship between neighborhood disorder and a sense of personal control. Our findings show that neighborhood disorder is associated with a decreased sense of control. However, regression analyses including interaction terms of neighborhood disorder and some individual characteristics show that the negative effect of neighborhood disorder on sense of control is g…
