Tradition and Function in the Autos-da-fé of the Goa Inquisition
The decision to establish a branch of the Inquisition in Goa created a unique reality in the Portuguese empire: that of having an inquisitorial tribunal exerting jurisdiction over a majority of people who had recently converted to Catholicism in an entirely colonial setting. This tribunal operated within a society marked by efforts to convert and eradicate the visible signs of gentilidade, that is, the cultural, ritual, and material expressions o…
From Idolatry to Gentilidade
During the first half of the 17th century, the Goa Inquisition increased its focus on religious offences committed by the so-called Cristãos da Terra (local Christianized populations). Many of these perceived offences occurred in connection with rituals, practices and behaviours stemming from Asian cultural and religious settings, leading the inquisitors in Goa to assess a variety of external features and performances ("signs") in order to determ…
On Gentilidade as a Religious Offence
From the 1620s on, inquisitors in Goa referred ever more frequently to ‘gentilidade’ to name a type of religious offence perpetrated by local Christians in the Estado da Índia. This contribution proposes that the notion of ‘gentilidade’ employed by the inquisitors was a consequence of the overwhelming judicial activity of the Holy Office of Goa against religious offences originating in local customs, which resulted in singling out one that specif…
Before the Philippines
Portuguese texts resisted the use of Spanish holonyms for naming the Philippines during the sixteenth century and up to the dynastic transition of 1580, when Philip II became king of Portugal. As a result of their maritime ventures, the Portuguese spatial perception of the present-day Philippines differed from that of Spanish officials, by not recognizing a specific identity for the archipelago within the context of South East Asian islands. This…
