The agricultural system of a crisis years settlement: Archaeobotanical evidence from Late Bronze Age Pyla-Kokkinokremos, Cyprus
To date, archaeobotanical records for Late Bronze Age Cyprus provide little insight into agricultural activity of the time, such as specific farming systems and cultivation practices. This paper presents the results of an archaeobotanical study for the site of Pyla-Kokkinokremos (LC IIC, c. 1230–1170 BCE): a short-lived settlement that existed towards the end of the Late Bronze Age during a time often referred to as the crisis years on account of…
Bringing together macro- and micro-botanical remains in Bronze Age Cyprus: The cases of Alambra-Kato Lakkos and Agios Sozomenos-Ampelia
Revisiting the Archaeobotany of Prehistoric Crete
This article provides a new archaeobotanical synthesis for prehistoric Crete. It brings together all the published plant records from Neolithic and Bronze Age sites across the island, as well as unpublished archaeobotanical information for nine other prehistoric sites: Aposelemi, Chalepa, Mesorachi, Mesorachi Akri, Sopata, Chryssi, Chalasmenos, Juktas, and Alonaki. Following a previous synthesis in 2013, the records were compiled into a single da…
Examining the Ritual Landscape of Bronze Age Crete through the Lens of Archaeobotany
This paper investigates plant remains at three ritual sites from Bronze Age Crete: Kophinas, Knossos Anetaki and Petras. To date, ritual contexts on the island have been little investigated from an archaeobotanical standpoint. Analysis of the plant material from these three sites provides new data for the use of plants in ritual activities in both mortuary and non-mortuary contexts. The results are discussed from a semiotic and emotive perspectiv…
