  • Rabbi Nachman's Sonic Schemes

    Open Access•Assaf Shelleg•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 12

This article discusses Tzvi Avni's Second Piano Sonata, Epitaph, a sonic commentary on one of the inner tales in Rabbi Nachman's "The Seven Beggars". Written between 1974 and 1979, Epitaph not only marks the composer's act of translation (from words into music and from a textual tale into a wordless and semantically unmarked piano sonata) but also his very turn to ethnographic sources that defied their negative function in a national territorial …

  • The music histories signaled by (and in) Mordecai Seter’s notebooks

    Open Access•Assaf Shelleg•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Spanning more than 2700 pages, the notebooks Mordecai Seter had written between 1952 and 1993 feature more than to-do lists, teaching schedules, and other errands involving the musicians and functionaries that performed, published or broadcast his music. The notebooks disclose dozens of stylistic self-analyses (whose growing volume in the 1960s and 1970s would signal a creative impasse) alongside numerous citations from books on Jewish mysticism,…

  • Theological Stains

    Assaf Shelleg•BOOK•Theological Stains•2021

Theological Stains traces the growth of art music in Israel from the mid-twentieth century to the turn of the twenty-first. In a riveting and provocative account, Assaf Shelleg explores the theological grammar of Zionism and its impact on the art music written by emigrant and native composers grappling with biblical redemptive promises and diasporic patrimonies. Unveiling the network that bred territorial nationalism and Hebrew culture, Shelleg s…

  • Reshuffling Historiographical Cards

    Assaf Shelleg•CHAPTER•Jewish Contiguities and the…•2014

The postlude discusses the non-differential proliferation of modern Jewish art music in Europe, Mandatory Palestine, and Israel, and the collapse of the mechanism that nationalized the theological in Hebrew culture. The gradual usurping of linear compositional devices exposed the theological undercurrents of the Zionist project that had outgrown the secular space allocated to them in the Hebrewist discourse. Within the different rhythms respondin…

  • Jewish Contiguities and the Soundtrack of Israeli History

    Assaf Shelleg•BOOK•Jewish Contiguities and the…•2014

Shelleg revolutionizes the study of modern Israeli art music by tracking the surprising itineraries of Jewish art music in the move from Europe to Mandatory Palestine and Israel. Leaving behind clich es about East and West, Arab and Jew, this book provocatively exposes the legacies of European antisemitism and religious Judaism in the making of Israeli art music

  • Israeli Art Music

    Assaf Shelleg, Shelleg Shelleg•ARTICLE•Israel Studies•2012•References: 2

Israeli art music reveals that the soundtrack of Israeli history is greater than the sum of its parts, which usually include popular and folk music genres. Surveying the development of Israeli art music from the late 1930s to the 1970s, this article attempts to transcend the periodic partitions that characterize the field's historiography, which has had little contact with recent historical and historiographic shifts in the study of Israeli histo…
