From the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine the Baltic Orthodox churches subordinated to the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) have gone through considerable changes in their canonical status, but have also stood out with controversial public statements about the war. In this article we analyse how the Orthodox churches of the Moscow Patriarchate have reacted to the Russian war in Ukraine and what have been the major canonical changes in Latvia …

Pētījumā analizēti pirmie divi posmi padomju reliģisko organizāciju (ieskaitot Latvijas Evaņģēliski luterisko baznīcu (LELB)) attiecībās ar Pasaules baznīcu padomi (PBP) – periods, kad padomju vara dalību PBP uzskatīja par nevēlamu, un posms, kad padomju vara sāka plānot vairāku PSRS kristīgo konfesiju iestāšanos PBP (LELB tika uzņemta PBP 1962. g.). • Political Theology of Baroque Ruler

Open Access•Deniss Hanovs, Valdis Tēraudkalns•ARTICLE•RUDN Journal of Russian History•2022

The study analyses the political theology and imagery of a female Russian ruler in the first half of the 18th century in the context of the European political discourses on feminine rulers during the baroque period. The coronation ritual of Empress Elizabeth (ruled 1741-1761, crowned 25 April 1742) reflected in the coronation book (1744) illustrates the transition of European images of a baroque feminine ruler into the semiotics of westernized Ru…

Priit Rohtmets, Valdis Tēraudkalns•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2016

Three Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—regained their independence in 1991. Established in 1918, the states decided to restore their de facto independence in 1991, declaring the years from 1940 to 1991 as a period of occupation.1 After Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) signed the Treaty of Nonaggression (i.e., the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) and its secret protocols in 1939, which gave the USSR freedom to act in …

The authors of the article analyse the ideology of the authoritarian regime which lasted in Latvia from the coup d'état on 15 May 1934 until the beginning of the Soviet occupation on 17 June 1940. A variety of sources (newspapers and books of the analysed period) are used for the article. The birthday celebrations of authoritarian leader Kārlis Ulmanis are used as a case study to show the performative elements of the regime. The authors argue tha…

  • From the Port of Ventspils to Great Courland Bay

Imbi Sooman, Jesma McFarlane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Baltic Studies•2013•References: 7

In the seventeenth century, Duke Jakob Kettler of Courland embraced the mercantile theories of his age and engaged in overseas colonialism. After several aborted attempts, the Courlanders managed to establish a settlement on Tobago in 1654 only to lose it to the Dutch five years later. European competitors and indigenous resistance frustrated the Duke’s attempts to regain control over the colony. Despite its limited scope and success, the Couroni…

  • Latvian Baptist Traditions in Transition

    Valdis Tēraudkalns•ARTICLE•Religion State & Society•1999

I intend not so much to write about Latvian Baptist traditions in the past as to reflect on the challenges Baptists in Latvia face as part of a society which is in the process of being integrated into Western Europe. It is important to try to avoid stereotypes: as others have pointed out the declaration that 'such and such is the Baptist tradition' may mean only that 'we have done it thus ever since I can remember' or 'this is how it was done in …
