Climate benefits of Amazon secondary forests—recent advances and research needs
A quarter of the deforested Amazon has regrown as secondary tropical forest and yet the climatic importance of these complex regenerating landscapes is only beginning to be recognised. Advances in satellite remote-sensing have transformed our ability to detect and map changes in forest cover, while detailed ground-based measurements from permanent monitoring plots and eddy-covariance flux towers are providing new insights into the role of seconda…
Thermal stress in degraded forests in the Brazilian Amazon Arc of Deforestation
Understanding thermal stress in tropical forests has taken on new urgency in light of accelerating climate change and expansion of deforestation and forest degradation. Degraded tropical forests in particular may be approaching critical temperature thresholds even more rapidly than intact forests, with implications for tree survival and ecosystem recovery. We investigate thermal stress in degraded tropical forests within the Brazilian Amazon Arc …

Impact of land tenure on deforestation control and forest restoration in Brazilian Amazonia
This study examines how land tenure constrains Brazil’s ability to meet its deforestation control and forest restoration goals in its Amazonia biome. Our findings are based on an updated assessment of land tenure and land use in the region. Between 2019 and 2021, 44% of deforestation in Amazonia occurred in private lands, while forest removal in settlements ranged from 31% to 27% of the total. Deforestation in undesignated public lands increased …

Brazil needs juridical security to recover agri-environmental epistemic sovereignty
Space-Time Dynamics of Land Use in the Municipality of Goianésia Do Pará, Brazil
Hydroelectric energy generates more than 50% of all renewable electricity in the world. The Amazon is home to a large part of these ventures, promoted as a strategy of energy independence in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the countries of the region. However, these hydroelectric plants lead to changes in land cover, fragmentation, degradation, and loss of tropical forests. This article analyzes the spatial pattern of alterations in t…
Hanseníase Em Um Estado Hiperendêmico: Tendência Segmentar E Identificação De Aglomerados Espaciais De Alto Risco De Transmissão
Objective: To analyze leprosy indicators aiming to identify areas of greatest risk of transmission in Pará, from 2004 to 2018. Methods: Ecological study using secondary data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System. By Joinpoint regression, 11 indicators were analyzed, Poisson probability analyzed the three main ones and SaTScanTM had clusters of municipalities with high risk of transmission. It was considered significant p
Marked non-compliance with deforestation embargoes in the Brazilian Amazon
Advances in monitoring capacity and strengthened law enforcement have helped to reduce deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon since the early 2000s. Embargoes imposed on the use of deforested land are important instruments for deterring deforestation and enabling forest recovery. However, the extent to which landowners respect embargoes in the Brazilian Amazon is unknown. In this study, we evaluated the current recovery status of embargoes due to …
Multitemporal Analysis of Land Use and Land Cover within an Oil Block in the Ecuadorian Amazon
The Ecuadorian Amazon is considered a biodiverse region, and at the same time contains the largest number of oil blocks and oilfields in the country. Oil exploitation requires the implementation of oil facilities and related infrastructure, such as roads, water, and energy supply, for operation. These large engineering works can alter the dynamics of the Amazonian natural ecosystems. This paper analyzes the land use and land cover (LULC) change a…
Massive soybean expansion in South America since 2000 and implications for conservation
Expansion of soybean farming into deforested areas in the amazon biome: The role and impact of the soy moratorium
Multitemporal Analysis of Deforestation in Response to the Construction of the Tucuruí Dam
The expansion of hydroelectric dams that is planned, and under construction, in the Amazon basin is a proposal to generate “clean” energy, with the purposes of meeting the regional energy demand, and the insertion of Brazil into the international economic market. However, this type of megaproject can change the dynamics of natural ecosystems. In the present article, the spatiotemporal patterns of deforestation according to distance from the reser…

Fronteira Agrícola e a política de priorização dos municípios no combate ao desmatamento no Estado do Pará, Amazônia: Agricultural Frontier and the prioritization policy of the municipalities in comba…
The expansion of the agricultural frontier is a reality in the Amazon region and in the State of Pará, agricultural activities have moved to the Southwest mesoregion of the state, implying in the increase of deforestation in the municipalities embargoed and priority sayings according to the Green Municipalities Program (PMV). Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the advance of the agricultural frontier in view of the PMV policy that prioriti…

Recent cropping frequency, expansion, and abandonment in Mato Grosso, Brazil had selective land characteristics
This letter uses satellite remote sensing to examine patterns of cropland expansion, cropland abandonment, and changing cropping frequency in Mato Grosso, Brazil from 2001 to 2011. During this period, Mato Grosso emerged as a globally important center of agricultural production. In 2001, 3.3 million hectares of mechanized agriculture were cultivated in Mato Grosso, of which 500 000 hectares had two commercial crops per growing season (double crop…
