Ecofeminist Sensorium Mise-en-scène in The Scent of Green Papaya
This paper proposes a new theoretical framework for analyzing the role of gendered sensorium mise-en-scène in the context of the Anthropocene. Through theoretical inquiry and textual analysis, this study explores the shift from anthropocentrism to feminist ecocentrism in film, examining how this gendered approach enhances storytelling and frames the relationship between spectatorship, cinema, and environmental justice. Specifically, it investigat…
Waiting with the Void
Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot questions the idea of time as astraight line, much like quantum physics views time as something thatarises from connections, emerges through actions, and unfolds in realways. In the play, Beckett’s repeating scenes of waiting and emptinessturn the void into a lively space where things take shape and change. This study examines how the play’s repeating scenes, significantsilences, and connections between character…
Publishing with Tree-Media
In response to the ecological and epistemic crises of the Capitalocene, this paper examines how eco-artist Thijs Biersteker develops tree-media—sensor-driven AI installations that treat trees and fungi not as metaphors or data sources, but as co-authors of environmental knowledge. Through the concept of arbo-real aesthetics, the paper proposes an elemental model of publishing rooted in multispecies reciprocity, latency, and refusal. Biersteker’s …
From the Coast to the High Mountains
The archaeology and heritage of South Sinai is rich and varied. Most research to date has focused on the High Mountains, specifically the area around the famous St Catherine’s Monastery, placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002 (Saint Catherine Area, World Heritage Site 954). Recently, the Sinai Peninsula Research and the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa projects have focused on the landscape surrounding the St C…
Time for a New Sinai Map
Sinai’s Imaginary Boundary Line in Twenty-first Century
An imaginary line had been assigned on small-scale non-survey or non-treaty compiled maps to mark the Egyptian-Levantine boundary, a repetitive pattern since – at least – the sixteenth century CE. It ran through Sinai Peninsula between Suez and Rafah. Little is discussed about the origins of the line which dates back to the emergence of the cartographic states. The Ottomans first attempted to formalize this line in the Firman of 1841 CE. The latt…
Mapping and Mapmaking in the High Mountains of Sinai Peninsula
The mapping and mapmaking practices of the historical (19th century CE) and modern (20th century CE) cartographers shaped the geographical knowledge across the Sinai Peninsula. Similar knowledge was mainly sourced and transformed from the intangible geo-heritage of the local Bedouins in the form of inherited and undocumented oral knowledge. The Mount Sinai vicinity in the northern half of the High Mountains of Sinai Peninsula continues to be the …
Gaza from Sand and Sea
The catalogue edited by Alan Chambon on Gaza's collection of Jawdat al-Khoudary is an unprecedented effort to present the threatened material culture of the South Levantine strip. It is a unique, r
Towards a quantification model
Under four consecutive economical transition phases in 1967 to 2011 CE, the eco-cultural mass tourism strengthened its position as the main economical activity in the High Mountains of Sinai Peninsula (i.e., UNESCO WHS No. 954). The interchanging relation between different stakeholders on one hand, and mass tourism on the other hand; in addition to the domestic mass urbanisation and modernisation policies; all caused a series of impacts on the so…
