  • Unplug to recharge”: Accessing respite through song in a culturally and linguistically diverse perinatal context

    Charulatha Mani•ARTICLE•Arts & Health•2022•References: 13

The article discusses implications for socially-mediated healthcare in culturally diverse contexts. The idea of "song" enables access to a space of sanctuary wherein health inequities can be tackled in meaningful and decolonising ways

  • Of Two Arias and Nine Ragas: Analysing Monteverdi through a Karnatik Lens

    Open Access•Charulatha Mani•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2022•References: 20

Commencing from an elaboration of extant theoretical and analytical positions in Monteverdi studies, this article closely analyses two of the most well‐known arias from Claudio Monteverdi's earliest opera, L'Orfeo (1607), from the melodic perspective of the Karnatik music of South India. In identifying ragas within Monteverdi's melodic structures, this approach evidences the author's practice‐based explorations of the arias while harking back to …

  • Rethinking the Viruttam in Karnatak Music: Music for Poetry

    Charulatha Mani•ARTICLE•Asian Music•2022

The Viruttam is a vocal improvisatory form in Karnatak music of South India. It explores verses of poetry using raga as the melodic medium and the natural poetic meter as its rhythmic framework. In this article, I draw on literature, primarily from native practitioner-scholars, and on my own experiences as an established Karnatak performer to reimagine Viruttam from a text-centric perspective. Adopting textual, raga, and practice-based analyses a…

  • Livelihoods as a kaleidoscope of distributed lifeworlds: Towards a nuanced understanding of music-making and identity in migrants in South-East Queensland

    Charulatha Mani•ARTICLE•Music Education Research•2020

This study presents an investigation into the multiple and often marginalised ways of being, knowing, educating, and performing the complex identity of migrant musicianship. It examines the lived experiences of migrant musicians in South East Queensland and is based on the premise that cultural diversity as experienced through music creates value in ways that are complex, particularly in the context of displaced lives. The article is built on the…

  • Global mobility in music higher education: Reflections on how intercultural music-making can enhance students’ musical practices and identities

Open Access•Brydie-Leigh Bartleet, Catherine Grant et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Music…•2020

Music higher education institutions are increasingly recognising the educational value of intercultural learning experiences. Delivering such learning experiences in a way that provides music students with a rich cultural and musical learning experience, rather than a superficial one, can be a challenging task, particularly in the case of short-term ‘mobility’ or ‘study-abroad’ programmes. This article explores ways to address this challenge by r…

  • Gesture in Musical Declamation: An Intercultural Approach

    Open Access•Charulatha Mani•ARTICLE•Musicologist•2017

This paper draws parallels between gesture in South Indian Carnatic singing practice, and rhetorical gesture used by orators and singers in 16th and 17th century Early Modern Europe. The paper begins by referencing relevant historical literature on the performance practices. In doing so, it identifies declamation in music as an ideal musical framework for gestured performance. The paper then practically addresses the role of gesture in present cr…
