A Tale of Two Frictions: Building Ethical Software Solutions by Challenging Tech's Obsession with Efficiency: The Case of Salesforce Nonprofit Fundraising Teams
The enterprise technology ethos of efficiency biases corporate software development towards seamlessness. What happens when that ethos contradicts its clients' philosophies, needs, or goals? This case study presents a tale of two frictions. The first part chronicles our product team's dedication to streamlining our nonprofit client's organizational procedures and the unexpected challenges we encountered trying to achieve change. The second part d…
This work proposes methodological designs contributing to an analytical-practical repositioning of ethnographic-studies of development, beyond the exclusive human domain. Starting from a conceptual and methodological actor-oriented perspective bases, we are proposing a socio-material approach. The proposal suggests an experimental ontology of the social actor that interconnect social relations to the territories' material properties. Considering …
Participatory Development
Participatory development is a process of taking into account people's agency in development by involving them in decision making over planning processes that affect their lives. This permits them to exercise their right to challenge established values and institutions. Against universal and top‐down solutions put forward by development experts, participation raises the central issue of reflexivity while suggesting how different forms of knowledg…
Dependency Theory and Underdevelopment
The relation between dependency theory and underdevelopment brings to the fore the raison d'être of a contemporary social anthropology of development. The downfall of the main counterdiscourse to modernization theory, namely dependency theory, lured social anthropologists to embark on the ethnographic study of the inner workings of colonial administrations and capitalist markets, the process of labor migration, and urbanization. Over time this le…

Reframing 'Crisis' in Fair Trade Coffee Production: Trajectories of Agrarian Change in Nicaragua
A focus on crisis provides a methodological window to understand how agrarian change shapes producer engagement in fair trade. This orientation challenges a separation between the market and development, situating fair trade within global processes that incorporate agrarian histories of social change and conflict. Reframing crisis as a condition of agrarian life, rather than emphasizing its cyclical manifestation within the global economy, reveal…
Tackling the new materialities: Modern food and counter-movements in Ecuador
Bolivia: Refounding the Nation
This is an interesting and ambitious book. Artaraz, in a bold and courageous attempt, is trying to provide an encompassing view of the contemporary social and development processes in Bolivia. The first three chapters of the book provide a general context to the political success of the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS or Movement Towards Socialism); however, the amount of political information, reporting of the press and ‘theoretical’ interpretatio…

Local Science vs Global Science: Approaches to Indigenous Knowledge in International Development
Re‐approaching social development: A Field of Action Between Social Life and Policy Processes
This article reflects on contemporary social development, and suggests that we need to initiate a process of thinking about a post neo‐liberal development agenda. As a step in this direction, it is suggested we need to re‐approach the social as a conceptual category in order to consider social analysis not simply as an epiphenomenon of economic development, but as a social sphere in its own right. To start thinking about this process, the social …

Bridging two worlds: An ethnography of bureaucrat- peasant relations in western Mexico
The extended case which forms the core of this chapter represents a journey into the everyday lives of bureaucrats and peasants in Jalisco, Mexico. The ethnography provided the means by which the researchers could begin to explore the different bodies of knowledge operative in the lives of these actors.1 The presentation of the case follows the chronology in which we slowly acquired a picture of the dilemmas and expectations of the peasants and b…

The Social Construction of International Food: A New Research Agenda
In this paper, we critically review current debates associated with the international food system. We then outline a revised set of conceptual and methodological principles linking globalization to the variable responses of actors engaged in the production, supply, and transfer of food. We look at the production of agricultural exports in Chile and food consumption in the United Kingdom as examples of ways in which networks of value are developed…
Constructing Quality: Emerging Food Networks in the Rural Transition
In this paper some of the main reasons for a renewed examination of the relationships between globalisation, the state, and rural development are analysed. It is suggested that there is a need for conceptual development that will allow a study of transnational and regional 'food networks' and an analysis of how these networks are embedded in social and political processes and practices. The approach is deliberately integrative and broad based, wi…
