Modes of affordance
Ever since the introduction of the concept of affordance, a debate has continued about how this concept captures the diversity of action possibilities triggered by our environment. One facet of this debate concerns the individual specificity, hence societal diversity, regarding how affordance changes as life changes, such as when we get older. Affordance, or action possibility actualized in the moment someone perceives it, is a dynamic relation b…
Lack of Participatory Effort
In all planning processes, including those we label participatory, there are neglected parties. Even when co-produced decisions, equity objectives, or common initiatives are at hand, some actors are likely to be less listened to, or they are never even recognised, hence, ‘perfect’ participation does not exist. The imag…
Interior Design Dilemmas in a Shared Room of Silence

This paper explores design students’ proposals for a redesign of the interior of a room of silence at the SUS hospital in Malmö. Reflection and existential meaning-making are discussed in relation to the material culture of design, and more specifically in relation to four different themes found among the students’ proposals: nature as common symbolic framework and salutary force; lighting creating a visual and spatial ambience for retreat; inter…
