  • Decolonizing Hawai‘i through Dance

    Open Access•Lina Aschenbrenner•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2026

This article examines the decolonizing potential of Hawaiian hula as taught by kumu hula Roselle Keli‘ihonipua Bailey at Ka ‘Imi Na‘auao O Hawai‘i Nei Institute. Drawing on six months of ethnographic fieldwork in 2023, I show how hula’s relational, land-based aesthetics function as female lived religion rooted in a Kanaka ‘Ōiwi worldview in Hawai‘i. Bailey’s pedagogy cultivates aesthetics that contrast with globalized individualistic spiritualiti…

  • Studying the Materialization of Power in the Body

    Lina Aschenbrenner•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2025

The body plays a crucial role in a critical study of religion that is interested in the interrelation of religion and social and cultural power dynamics, yet the “body” often remains a floating signifier. This paper seeks to overcome this default mode of critical social and cultural studies by placing the focus on the material body. Through an examination of the aesthetics of the neo-spiritual Israeli movement practice known as Gaga, I demonstrat…

  • A Conversation on Aesthetics and Affects of Power

Lina Aschenbrenner, Gerrit Lange et al.•ARTICLE•Implicit Religion•2025

In May 2022 we held a workshop at the University of Erfurt titled Aesthetics and Affects of Power in the Context of Religion. The workshop was born out of a shared personal interest in the implicit, unconscious, material, and embodied negotiations of power, specifically as they take place in religious fields and discourses of religious participation. We observed that religious practices and discourses have historically taken, and continue to take…

  • Aesthetic Assemblages

    Lina Aschenbrenner•ARTICLE•Material Religion•2024•References: 37

This paper presents a study of the aesthetics of the free-form improvisational dance practice Gaga as an example of contemporary neo-spirituality. The study is based on aesthetic data collected in recreational Gaga classes at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv. The study shows that the aesthetics of practices are relational and depend on a variety of heterogeneous factors; collective and shared aesthetics persist despite individualization. The…
