Building blocks for developing a research question
A precisely formulated research question is becoming increasingly important within the humanities. This applies not only to research funding applications, but also to articles, papers, and student theses. This article presents a tool allowing students to develop research questions on their own, which is open enough to allow for a wide variety of research questions, while still giving users sufficient guidance to formulate a precise question. It a…
Reformed Theology in Scholastic Development
Reformed scholasticism has been studied afresh in recent decades by ‘new school’ historians who have recaptured the movement in its own context, particularly in the work of Richard Muller and those involved in the so-called Utrecht School of research into this area of Reformation and post-Reformation historical theology. This chapter assesses ways in which that recent historiography has helped illumine features about the period, its texts, its co…
Do This in Remembrance of Me Online? Irenic and Elenctic Normativity in Liturgical Studies
The authors of this article, two liturgical scholars and a scholar in dogmatics, engaged in a public discussion of whether or not a Holy Communion should be celebrated online. Speaking about the case afterwards, they found that both the discourse of liturgical studies and of dogmatics introduced comparable normative elements. Barnard and Klomp in liturgical studies speak with Ronald Grimes of ‘ritual criticism’ and with Roy Rappaport of ‘The True…
Buildings and Bibles Between Profanization and Sacralization
Based on an ethnographic case study of three recently erected church buildings in the Dutch Bible Belt, this article demonstrates how orthodox Reformed congregations in the Netherlands define church buildings-especially the auditoria-and bibles as simultaneously profane and mediating the sacred. These at first glance ambivalent discourses are informed by a particular semiotic ideology, which maintains that material spaces and objects like these a…
Scholasticism Reformed
This Festschrift celebrates Professor Willem J. van Asselt's many contributions to the study of Reformed scholasticism on the occasion of his retirement from Utrecht University. The authors argue that the resurgence of interest in scholasticism, especially in Reformed scholasticism, has in turn reformed our views of scholasticism. While most of the volume's essays contribute to the reassessment of scholasticism through relevant historical case st…
Introduction. Reforming Views Of Reformed Scholasticism
This introductory chapter aims to do three things. First, it sketches the renaissance of interest in Reformed scholasticism and the radical reassessment brought about by recent scholarship. Given the role that Willem van Asselt has played in this revaluation, sketching it goes hand in hand with the second aim: introducing the main foci of van Asselts scholarly interests. Finally, since all contributions are somehow connected to van Asselts work, …
Scholasticism Reformed Essays In Honour Of Willem J Van Asselt
Philosophy of religion
In a survey of Internet resources available to philosophers of religion, the authors critically discuss philosophy sites, e-journals, virtual libraries etc that are relevant to philosophy of religion. They conclude that the Internet is increasingly becoming a helpful and even indispensable source of information
The meaning of the authority of the Bible
What does it mean to say that the Bible has authority? The author introduces and develops J. M. Bocheński's philosophical theory about the nature of authority. On this basis, he distinguishes between different kinds of authority, which he applies to the authority of the Bible. Subsequently, he shows that the theory of Bocheński should be improved by reworking it from the perspective of speech-act theory. This leads to the presentation of an overa…
