‘Pre’ and ‘post’ marking in Nanosyntax
The Podlasie dialect of Polish exhibits a curious nominal case declension paradigm where the dative is expressed by a preposition and a genitive suffix ( prep N -gen ), which constitutes a typologically rare pattern. Moreover, the instrumental in this dialect, which is hierarchically above the dative, is marked with only a suffix (N -ins ), unexpectedly dropping the preposition. Polish Deadjectival Nouns as Nominalized Adverbs
Semelfactives are bigger than degree achievements
This paper argues that semelfactive and degree achievement verbs are morphosyntactically distinct, despite the fact that the morphemes they are made of are often syncretic even in languages with synthetic verb morphology like Czech or Polish. We use the mechanisms of Nanosyntax, a theory of the architecture of grammar in which the lexicon stores entire syntactic subtrees, to show that there is a structural containment between semelfactives and de…
A note on lexicalizing ‘what’ and ‘who’ in Russian and in Polish
The contrast between the Russian čto and the Polish co ‘what’ is syntactic and reflects the way in which an identical sequence of features in the syntactic representation becomes realized as morphology. Specifically, I argue that this scenario follows from a spell-out mechanism outlined in Starke (2018), where prefix formation, as in the Russian tri-morphemic čt-o but not in the Polish bi-morphemic c-o , takes place in order to spell out a featur…
