  • Deferred reference across categories

    Open Access•E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Linguistics and Philosophy•2025

The literature on demonstratives mostly focuses on DPs (demonstrative pronouns and determiners), which denote in the entity domain. However, demonstratives can also belong to other categories and denote in the domains of manners (she acted like this/like that/thus ), locations ( she was here/there ), degrees ( she was yay tall ), amounts (Russian: ona vypila stoljko vody ‘she drank that_much water’), qualities (Russian: ona uže pila takoe vino ‘s…

  • Not every pronoun is always a pronoun

    Open Access•E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Linguistics and Philosophy•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

A homonymy analysis is proposed to explain the so-called "demonstrative use" of personal pronouns. This analysis explains why some pronouns ( it ) do not allow a demonstrative use, as demonstrated in Nunberg (1993). The absence of a demonstrative feature in it can also account for the fact that it does not allow deferred reference. It is argued on the basis of the structure of the nominal demonstrative paradigm that the homonymy analysis is more …

  • A Minimalist Condition on Semantic Reconstruction

    E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 43

This article explains three known constraints on scope reconstruction-reconstruction is blocked into wh-islands, after remnant movement, and after countercyclic merger-by postulating an underlying condition on semantic reconstruction, which follows naturally from Minimalist assumptions on chain interpretation in combination with the principle of compositionality. The result is a unifying alternative analysis of the data discussed in Cresti 1995 ,…

  • On the Anaphoricity of Too

    E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Kripke (1990/2009) argues that the presupposition triggered by the additive particle too is anaphoric in nature, an influential thesis with important ramifications for the theory of presupposition. This article reexamines the empirical evidence and proposes an alternative explanation, leaving too with only its traditional existential presupposition

  • Stranding, weak pronouns, and the fine structure of the Dutch Mittelfeld

    Open Access•E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2008•References: 19

The purpose of this paper is to develop a tool for determining the unmarked position of various PP types in the Dutch Mittelfeld. The paper argues that the distribution of stranded prepositions, which obey a Freezing constraint, can be used for this purpose, and that the same holds for prepositions with a weak pronominal complement. Among the results of this twin diagnostic are independent evidence for a case-movement analysis of scrambling, and …

  • A Note on Weakest Crossover

    E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Conditions on variable binding are of two types:those that (roughly) require a pronoun to be A-bound, and those that ban locally ā-bound pronouns. While the two types are usually felt to be extensionally equivalent, argue here on the basis of weakest crossover that the former type, which fits the Minimalist Program better, is also empiri cally superior

  • Weak Crossover as a Scope Phenomenon

    E G Ruys•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2000•Cited by: 18•References: 15

This article investigates the proper characterization of the condition that is responsible for weak crossover effects. It argues that the relevant condition belongs to scope theory and that weak crossover arises from the way in which scope is determined in syntax. This implies that weak crossover can occur whenever an operator must take scope over a pronoun, even when the pronoun and the operator are not coindexed and the intended interpretation …
