  • Constraints on information-structural marking in the DP

    Open Access•Johannes Mursell, Anke Himmelreich•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation•2026

This paper investigates how information-structural categories like focus can be linearized inside the DP. Starting from the claim that information-structural marking possibilities in the DP-structure often mirror marking possibilities in the CP-structure within the same language, we show that while this assumption holds for various European languages, it breaks down when Mabia languages are taken into account. Focusing on Likpakpaanl, we provide …

  • Agreement with disjoined subjects in German

    Open Access•Anke Himmelreich, Katharina Hartmann•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2023

This paper presents results from an empirical study on number and person agreement with disjoined subjects in Standard German. We show that disjunctive agreement resolves to plural if one or both of the disjuncts are plural. The main empirical finding of the paper is that if both disjuncts are singular, verbal agreement is either singular or plural, irrespective of the relative order of subject and verb. We account for this observation in an Opti…

  • Feature deletion by head movement – A new solution to agreement asymmetries in Modern Standard Arabic

    Open Access•Anke Himmelreich•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2023

In this paper, I present a new approach to agreement asymmetries in Modern Standard Arabic. In Arabic, the verb agrees with the subject in number whenever the word order is SV, but not if the word order is VS. I argue against previous approaches that suggest that this lack of number agreement is due to the absence of syntactic Agree in these configurations. I propose a new account that is based on the assumption that the lack of number agreement …

  • Opaque Intervention

    Fabian Heck, Anke Himmelreich•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 64

In this article, we illustrate that arguments in German and Czech differ in their ability to function as antecedents for certain associates (floating quantifiers, parasitic gaps, and predicate nominals). While some of the differences can be explained in terms of surface intervention, others cannot. We propose that this is accounted for if the association abilities are determined early in the derivation-namely, at the edge of the vP phase, where t…
