  • Tone, stress, quantity, and quality

    Open Access•Gašper Beguš, Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Journal of Phonetics•2026

In this paper, we report on the prosodic system of Žiri Slovenian, which displays an intricate set of interactions between tone, stress, quantity, and vowel quality. The prosodic restrictions are complex, exceeding the patterns observed in most other pitch-accented languages. Some of the patterns are well-motivated (e.g. the preference of High tone syllables to be stressed; the requirement for long vowels to have High tone) while others lack phon…

  • Input Prevocalic Faithfulness and Opacity

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec, Yixin Wang•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2025

Positional faithfulness in parallel Optimality Theory refers to prominent positions in the output. This squib explores the predictions of a new class of constraints that refer to prominent positions in the input. We show that input prevocalic faithfulness correctly predicts counterfeeding opacity in which a consonantal process underapplies in positions that are no longer prevocalic due to vowel deletion, as well as counterbleeding opacity in whic…

  • Shift in Harmonic Serialism

    Open Access•FREDERICK GIETZ, Peter Jurgec et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Harmonic Serialism is a serial version of Optimality Theory in which Gen is restricted to one operation at a time. What constitutes one operation has been a key question in the literature. This paper asks whether shift, in which a feature moves/flops from one segment to another, should be considered an operation. We review three pieces of evidence that suggest so. We show that only the one-step shift analysis can capture the tonal patterns in Kib…

  • Variable Hiatus in Persian is Affected by Suffix Length

Open Access•Koorosh Ariyaee, Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2021

In this paper, we conduct two experiments to examine variable hiatus in Spoken Persian. The production experiment reveals that variation is restricted. For instance, elision of the first vowel, which is cross-linguistically common (Casali 1997), is never attested. Moreover, elision of the second vowel is rare with monosegmental (-V) suffixes. The perception experiment confirms that elision of the second vowel is preferred with polysegmental suffi…

  • Positional faithfulness drives laxness alternations in Slovenian

    Open Access•Michael Becker, Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Phonology•2020

We analyse the distribution of vowel laxness and stress alternations in Slovenian nouns (for example in the nominative and genitive forms of the masculine noun [ˈjɛzik ~ jeˈzika] ‘tongue’), showing that stress shifts away from mid lax vowels in initial syllables. A stress shift of this sort is predicted by positional faithfulness (Beckman 1997). We show that this prediction is correct, contra McCarthy (2007, 2010) and Jesney (2011). The productiv…

  • Postalveolar co-occurrence restrictions in Slovenian

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec, Jessamyn Schertz•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2020•References: 31

  • Opacity in Šmartno Slovenian

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Phonology•2019

Šmartno is a critically endangered dialect of Slovenian that exhibits three interacting processes: final devoicing, unstressed high vowel deletion and vowel–glide coalescence. Their interaction is opaque: final obstruents devoice, unless they become final due to vowel deletion; high vowels delete, but not when created by coalescence. These patterns constitute a synchronic chain shift that leads to two emergent contrasts: final obstruent voicing a…

  • Indexation to stems and words

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec, Bronwyn M Bjorkman•ARTICLE•Phonology•2018

This paper presents an extension of indexed constraints, such that they can apply not only to individual morphemes, but also to potentially complex constituents such as the stem. This modification allows us to capture a class of long-distance morphologically derived environment effects (MDEEs) that have been previously unexplained. MDEEs typically involve an exceptional phonological pattern that is lost under affixation. Formally, MDEEs are predi…

  • Opaque Allomorph Selection in Japanese and Harmonic Serialism

Erin Hall, Peter Jurgec et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2018

Crosslinguistically, medial consonant clusters simplify by deleting or assimilating the first consonant /VpkV/ → [VkV] ~ [VkkV], never the second *[VpV] ~ *[VppV] (Steriade 2001, 2001/2008). Wilson (2000, 2001) demonstrates that this generalization holds in a number of different languages including Basque, Carib, Tunica, Diola-Fogny, and West Greenlandic. Parallel Optimality Theory (OT) fails to capture this asymmetry, as the output consonant app…

  • Antihiatski pojavi v knjižni slovenščini

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Jezikoslovni zapiski•2015

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Jezikoslovni zapiski•2015

Slovar novejšega besedja slovenskega knjižnega jezika (prim. Bokal idr. 2003) bo v primerjavi z dosedanjimi splošnimi leksikalnimi viri (SSKJ, SP 2001) drugače obravnaval fonološka vprašanja. Temeljni razliki sta način anketiranja in prikaz izgovora v slovarju. Ključne besede: neologizmi, fonologija, leksikografija, slovarji, Slovar slovenskega knjižnega jezika, Slovenski pravopis 2001, tonematika, transkripcija

  • Drago Unuk, Zlog v slovenskem jeziku (Ljubljana 2003)

    Open Access•Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Jezikoslovni zapiski•2015

Monografija Draga Unuka je temeljna fonetično-fono-loška raziskava sodobne slovenščine. V prispevku je predstavljena, ocenjena in umeščena v okvir postgenerativnih fonoloških teorij in eksperimentalno fonetičnih obravnav na Slovenskem v zadnjih dveh desetletjih

  • Lapsed Derivations

    Francesc Torres-Tamarit, Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Ternary stress presents a unique challenge to constraint-based metrical stress theories. The main question is how to model ternarity without ternary-specific representations, such as ternary feet.1 Along this line of reasoning, Elenbaas and Kager (1999) interpret ternarity as an underparsing effect in which long lapses are avoided while the number of feet is kept to a minimum. The standard constraint that prohibits long lapses is *LAPSE (1). This…

    Peter Jurgec•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 11

In many languages, loanwords allow patterns that are absent in the native phonology. 1 The phonotactic requirements for loanwords may thus be less restrictive than the ones for the native vocabulary. For instance, native items in Turkish only have voiceless obstruents in codas, while both voiced and voiceless obstruents are found in loanword codas (Inkelas
