A Formal Investigation of Q-Theory in Comparison to Autosegmental Representations
We use model theory to rigorously evaluate Q-Theory as proposed in Shih and Inkelas 2019 as an alternative to Autosegmental Phonology. We find that Q-Theory is remarkably similar to Autosegmental Phonology, contra some of Shih and Inkelas's claims. In particular, Q-Theory does not eschew the association relation, in Q-Theory the tone-bearing unit is the vowel, and Q-Theory and Autosegmental Phonology are equivalent in terms of the constraints the…
The intensional and the extensional properties of Headed Agreement By Correspondence
The goal of the paper is to analyze the relation between the data (the set of all possible input-output mapping generated by an OT system) and the theory (the ranking conditions that generate each grammar) for an OT system (abbreviated SHABC) that includes crucial constraints and candidates from Headed Agreement By Correspondence (Iacoponi, 2015) using property theory (Alber and Prince, in prep., a.o.).Such an analysis is important for three reas…
Formally mapping the typologies of interacting ABCD systems
The theory of surface correspondence has been the focus of much recent work (e.g. Shih & Inkelas 2014, Faytak 2014, Akinlabi & Iacoponi 2015, etc.). Most of this work on ‘ABCD’ falls along two avenues: analyzing consonant harmony as Agreement By Correspondence (Rose & Walker 2004, Hansson 2010, etc.), and using the same mechanism to handle Dissimilation (Walker 2000, Bennett 2013). Using recent advances in the understanding of formal OT typologie…
Tone-TBU Disparity in Three Phonologies of Cantonese
I propose a restricted theory of tone-TBU association called Basic Tonal Theory (BTT). BTT includes six well-attested constraints, and a restricted GEN. The typology contains attested cases of tone over-crowding resolution such as tone deletion, mora epenthesis, and mora deletion, but also predicts unattested cases of languages that resolve tonal crowding by using a combination of the aforementioned mechanisms based on the number of the morae in …
