  • Leftover agreement

    Open Access•Tatiana Bondarenko, Stanislao Zompì•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Based on data from number agreement in the four South Caucasian languages (Georgian, Laz, Megrelian, Svan), this paper argues that Vocabulary Insertion is only partially replacive: the exponent replaces only those features of the head which its specification matches exactly, whereas the remaining unlexicalized features—what we call leftover features —remain syntactically active. Our evidence comes from the fact that in South Caucasian languages t…

  • Polite Pronouns and the PCC

    Open Access•Luke James Adamson, Stanislao Zompì•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2025

The Person-Case Constraint (PCC) has played a substantial role in the development of linguistic theory in recent decades, particularly with respect to agreement and the encoding of person (Anagnostopoulou 2017a and references therein). While much of the generative literature on the PCC advances or assumes a (morpho)syntactic agreement-based account of PCC effects, we provide novel evidence from polite pronouns that challenges this perspective. Po…

  • A principled exception to the Müller-Takano Generalization

    Open Access•Stanislao Zompì•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2024

According to the Müller-Takano Generalization (Müller 1993; Takano 1994), a remnant that contains a trace resulting from a given type of movement cannot itself undergo that same type of movement. I argue that Richards’ (2004) data from Bulgarian “Russian-doll” wh-questions constitute principled exceptions to this generalization under an approach that derives it from a minimality condition on movement paths. Alternative approaches to the generaliz…

  • Taking the nominative (back) out of the accusative

    Open Access•C Christopoulos, Stanislao Zompì•ARTICLE•Natural Language and Linguistic…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 39

The nominative, the accusative and the dative have been recently argued to stand in proper containment to one another. In contrast to more traditional decompositions which posited no such containment, this new decomposition has been shown to account for the absence of ABA exponence patterns for this triplet of cases, i.e. for the fact that no rule of exponence applies in both nominative and dative without also applying in the accusative. We point…

  • Ergative is not inherent

    Open Access•Stanislao Zompì•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 11

I show that case syncretism obeys the same *ABA restriction previously observed in case-sensitive suppletion: no Vocabulary-Insertion rule can apply to both an inherent case and an unmarked core case (nominative/absolutive) without also applying to another core case (accusative/ergative). The case hierarchy that these effects motivate is one where the ergative is consistently put in the same box as the accusative, separately from all inherent cas…
