A social prescribing model for tackling the health and social inequalities of people living with severe mental illness
Codesigned and community-based participatory interventions may be crucial in tackling the health and social inequalities experienced by people with severe mental illness. However, given the complexity of such interventions, the social prescribing model that we describe in this paper, requires considerable implementation data prior to a full trial
Coping during the Covid-19 pandemic
Introduction : The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to health and care services, including substance use support, necessitating adaptations to maintain operational continuity. A lack of research exists into the factors that helped substance use services cope and maintain provision. This study aimed to elucidate the organizational resilience factors that assisted a substance use support service in sustaining operations and adapting…
Comparing Mental Health of Athletes and Non-athletes as They Emerge From a Covid-19 Pandemic Lockdown
Athletes going through transition periods such as injury or retirement have previously reported feelings of depression and anxiety, especially when feeling unsupported. Cessation of competitive sport during the pandemic has forced athletes through a non-normative transition and has reduced many opportunities to satisfy their basic psychological needs increasing the risk of poor wellbeing and loneliness. Whilst athletes are often praised for their…
An exercise intervention for people with serious mental illness
BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) often have poorer physical health than the general population. A coproduced physical activity intervention to improve physical activity for people with SMI in Northern Ireland was evaluated by co-researchers (researchers with lived experience of SMI) and academic researchers using a new approach to participatory data analysis called participatory theme elicitation (PTE). OBJECTIVE: Co-researcher…
Testing the psychometric properties of Kidscreen-27 with Irish children of low socio-economic status
Future research should apply the 7-factor model with children of low socio-economic status. Such efforts would help monitor the health status of the population
Physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and clustered cardiometabolic risk in 10‐ to 12‐year‐old school children
OBJECTIVES: (1) Investigate whether clustered cardiometabolic risk score, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), sedentary time (ST), and body mass index Z-scores (BMI Z-scores), differed between participants that met and did not achieve ≥60 min of daily moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA). (2) Compare clustered cardiometabolic risk score, BMI Z-score, ST, and MVPA by CRF status. METHODS: One hundred and one (n = 45 boys) 10- to 12-…
Does doing housework keep you healthy? The contribution of domestic physical activity to meeting current recommendations for health
Domestic physical activity accounts for a significant proportion of self-reported daily MVPA particularly among females and older adults however such activity is negatively associated with leanness suggesting that this activity may not be sufficient to provide all of the benefits normally associated with meeting the physical activity guidelines
Perceived control over physical and mental well-being
In a cross-sectional quota based survey 1013 adults (46% male, 54% female; aged 16-65+) in Northern Ireland from ABC1, C2 and DE social class groupings were asked about the perceived influence they have over their physical and mental health, and what types of lifestyle changes can improve health. Findings showed participants perceive that they have more control over their physical compared to mental health, with physical activity being the behavi…
The effect of teachers trained in a fundamental movement skills programme on children’s self-perceptions and motor competence
Perceived and actual motor competence are hypothesized to have potential links to children and young people’s physical activity (PA) levels with a potential consequential link to long-term health. In this cross-sectional study, Harter’s (1985, Manual for the Self-perception Profile for Children. Denver, CO: University of Denver) Competency Motivation-based framework was used to explore whether a group of children taught, during curriculum time, b…
