Social Robots in Social Institutions
As robots begin to operate in environments hitherto only occupied by humans, it has become common to introduce social and cultural thinking into robotics research. Starting from the conceptualisation of culture as an emergent property of participatory processes of sense-making, in this paper we argue that cultural robotics cannot be achieved without emotions. To defend this thesis, we will first justify our working concepts, then provide our argu…
Employers’ and applicants’ fairness perceptions in job interviews
This research examines the perceived fairness of two types of job interviews: robot-mediated and face-to-face interviews. The robot-mediated interview tests the concept of a fair proxy in the shape of a teleoperated social robot. In Study 1, a mini-public (n=53) revealed four factors that influence fairness perceptions of the robot-mediated interview and showed how HR professionals’ perception of fair personnel selection is influenced by moral pr…
Who is Best at Mediating a Social Conflict? Comparing Robots, Screens and Humans
The impacts of various mediation platforms on negotiation outcomes and perceptions are compared in this article. The mediator platforms contrasted were a (teleoperated) Telenoid robot, a human, and a computer screen. All of these platforms used the same script for process diagnosis, analysis, and advice on how to resolve an impasse in a simulated high-tech company de-merger negotiation. A fourth experimental condition consisted of a no-mediation …
The Complexity of Human Social Interactions Calls for Mixed Methods in HRI
In this research note, we offer a comment on the “A Primer for Conducting Experiments in Human-robot Interaction,” by G. Hoffman and X. Zhao, suggesting that due to the complexity of human social reality quantitative methods should be integrated into a mixed method approach
Sociality and Normativity for Robots
The paper develops a general conceptual framework for the ontological classification of human-robot interaction. After arguing against fictionalist interpretations of human-robot interactions, I present five notions of simulation or partial realization, formally defined in terms of relationships between process systems (approximating, displaying, mimicking, imitating, and replicating). Since each of the n criterial processes for a type of two-age…

Attitudinal Change in Elderly Citizens Toward Social Robots
Attitudes toward robots influence the tendency to accept or reject robotic devices. Thus it is important to investigate whether and how attitudes toward robots can change. In this pilot study we investigate attitudinal changes in elderly citizens toward a tele-operated robot in relation to three parameters: (i) the information provided about robot functionality, (ii) the number of encounters, (iii) personality type. Fourteen elderly residents at …
Climate Change and the Concept of Shared Ecological Responsibility
The recent debate about justice and responsibility increasingly tries to accommodate a new type of agentive situation where local short-term actions have global long-term consequences, due to the action’s embedding in complex interaction networks. Currently the debate is shifting focus from the spatial to the temporal dimension of such wide-scope results of individual actions. This shift from ‘global ethics’ to ‘intergenerational ethics’ and, in …

Forms of emergent interaction in General Process Theory
General Process Theory (GPT) is a new (non-Whiteheadian) process ontology. According to GPT the domains of scientific inquiry and everyday practice consist of configurations of ‘goings-on’ or ‘dynamics’ that can be technically defined as concrete, dynamic, non-particular individuals called general processes. The paper offers a brief introduction to GPT in order to provide ontological foundations for research programs such as interactivism that ce…
