  • Terrorism in the country of origin is linked to deterioration in the mental health of refugees

    Open Access•Kim Mannemar Sønderskov, P T Dinesen et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 20

Refugees flee their country of origin to escape threats to their existence. Yet, despite having left behind the immediate physical dangers in their country of origin, refugees may continue to experience negative psychological consequences of contemporary violence in that country because of their connection to it. Here, using longitudinal population data from Denmark, we show that refugees were substantially more likely to use antidepressants, and…

  • Reacting to Neighborhood Cues? Political Sophistication Moderates the Effect of Exposure to Immigrants

    Open Access•Bolette Danckert, P T Dinesen et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 48

Drawing on insights from political psychology regarding political information processing, this paper argues that politically sophisticated individuals are less sensitive to the social cues manifested in the ethnic composition of their neighborhood when they form political opinions. This prediction is founded on politically sophisticated individuals having a greater comprehension of news and other mass-mediated sources, which makes them less likel…

  • Facing Unemployment: Personal and Vicarious Unemployment Experiences Generate Favourable Perceptions of Unemployed People

    Bolette Danckert•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2017•Cited by: 13•References: 39

Stigma and negative stereotypes about unemployed people are likely to be distressing for individuals who experience unemployment. Nevertheless, empirical research on factors affecting unemployment stereotypes is surprisingly sparse. This article investigates an important aspect, namely, how personal and vicarious experiences with unemployment affect individuals’ generalized perceptions of unemployed people. The analysis is based on a unique data …

  • With an Open Mind: Openness to Experience Moderates the Effect of Interethnic Encounters on Support for Immigration

    Bolette Danckert, P T Dinesen et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 34

This article examines whether the effect of interethnic encounters on natives’ attitudes towards immigration varies with the Big Five personality trait openness to experience. We hypothesize that individuals who score high on openness, and who therefore are more appreciative of and responsive to new experiences, react more positively/less negatively to interethnic encounters. We test this conjecture on two surveys collected in Denmark and Canada.…

  • The Context of Voting: Does Neighborhood Ethnic Diversity Affect Turnout

Yosef Bhatti, Bolette Danckert et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2016

With continuing immigration to Western countries, an important question concerns how these demographic changes impact natives’ propensity to vote. In particular, the literature debates whether exposure to ethnic others in local contexts generates conflict that mobilizes individuals to vote (mobilization theory), diminishes social cohesion that in turn makes voters likely to withdraw from voting (marginalization theory), or does not impact turnout…
