  • Disrupting carbon lock-in from below

Open Access•Viviana Asara, Marco Caligari et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2026

Deep decarbonisation requires overcoming carbon lock-in and prioritising green ‘phase-in’ over necessary ‘phase-out’ strategies in fossil fuel-intensive energy and industrial sectors. This article analyses a case of localised transformative agency in Civitavecchia (Rome metropolitan area, Italy), a territory dependent on a major coal-fired power plant. Integrating a power resource framework with literature in environmental labour studies, we exam…

  • Navigating touristification through social entrepreneurship

    Open Access•Eduardo García-Frapolli, Viviana Asara•ARTICLE•Tourist Studies•2026•References: 46

Touristification has emerged as a defining feature of contemporary tourism development, often subordinating social and economic life to market-driven imperatives. This article examines how Indigenous community-based tourism (CBT) in the highly touristified Yucatan Peninsula articulate alternative tourism models grounded in collective organization and diversified livelihood strategies. Drawing on a qualitative multiple-case study based on semi-str…

  • Untangling the radical imaginaries of the Indignados' movement

    Open Access•Viviana Asara•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2025•Cited by: 22•References: 45

Under regimes of austerity, social movements ́ transformative eco-politics may appear endangered. What kinds of environmentalism and radical imaginaries can unfold in social movements in crisis-ridden societies? I focus on the ‘movement of the squares’ during its post-encampment phase, with a case study of three urban projects of the Indignados movement in Barcelona. Observation of these projects reveals the importance of three common and intertw…

  • Sustainability Culture, Environmental Activism and Political Ideology Among Young Adults

    Open Access•Viviana Asara, Alfredo Alietti•ARTICLE•SocietàMutamentoPolitica•2024

The 2018/2019 climate mobilisation have vigorously questioned the consensus about the sustainability paradigm that has been hegemonic since the 1980, politicising the environmental issue in the public debate, and representing a ‘political epiphany’ for an entire generation. How has this movement influenced young people’s interest for environmental issues, what is the extent and type of their environmental concern, what are their cognitive interpr…

  • The prefigurative politics of social movements and their processual production of space

    Open Access•Viviana Asara, G Kallis•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2022•Cited by: 10•References: 24

This paper investigates how the prefiguration of an alternative future by social movements produces new space through a processual dynamic. A case study of the Indignados movement in Barcelona shows how mobilizations evolved from symbolizing an alternative future in the square to constructing alternatives in the city in the post-encampment period. In the alternative projects forged during the post-square period, activists re-appropriated urban sp…

  • From planetary to societal boundaries

Open Access•Ulrich Brand, Barbara Muraca et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability: Science, Practice…•2021

The planetary boundaries concept has profoundly changed the vocabulary and representation of global environmental issues. We bring a critical social science perspective to this framework through the notion of societal boundaries and aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of the social nature of thresholds. We start by highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of planetary boundaries from a social science perspective. We then focus on capital…

Angelos Varvarousis, Viviana Asara et al.•ARTICLE•Social movement studies•2021•Cited by: 12•References: 45

This paper examines the evolvement of the ‘movement of the squares’ following the end of the more visible cycles of mobilization of the squares ́ occupations. We argue that a crucial aspect of this evolution lies in the creation of a social infrastructure of alternative (re)productive projects in the form of commons. We call this type of outcomes ‘social’ in order to distinguish them from the cultural, political and biographical outcomes underlin…

  • The Limits of Liberal Democracy

    Open Access•Viviana Asara•ARTICLE•Democratic Theory•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This critical commentary discusses Stephan Lessenich’s recent work on democracy. It argues that—to understand the structural boundaries of welfare capitalist democracy—we must critically unearth the limits of liberal democracy. This article first maintains that the absence of an economic democratization dimension is an outcome of liberal democracy’s shrinking of the meaning of the political. It next claims that defining democracy in terms of righ…

  • The Indignados as a Socio‐Environmental Movement

    Open Access•Viviana Asara•ARTICLE•Environmental Policy and Governance•2016

This study analyses the framing processes of the Indignados movement in Barcelona, as an exemplar of the latest wave of protests, and argues that it expresses a new ecological–economic way out of the crisis. It finds that the movement was not just a reaction to the economic crisis and austerity policies, but that it put forward a metapolitical critique of the social imaginary and (neo)liberal representative democracy. The diagnostic frames of the…

  • Socially sustainable degrowth as a social–ecological transformation

    Open Access•Viviana Asara, Iago Otero et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2015•Cited by: 45•References: 26

  • Degrowth, Democracy and Autonomy

Open Access•Viviana Asara, Emanuele Profumi et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Values•2013

The quest for real democracy is one of the components of sustainable degrowth. But the incipient debate on democracy and degrowth suffers from general defi-nitions and limited connections to political philosophy and democracy theory. This article offers a critical review of democracy theory within the degrowth literature, taking as its focal point a relevant debate between Serge Latouche and Takis Fotopoulos. We argue that the core of their conte…
