  • A unifying theory of foreign intervention in domestic climate policy

Open Access•Anthony Harding, Juan Moreno-Cruz•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Behavior &…•2026•Referencias: 2

  • Climate benefits of afforestation and reforestation with varying species mixtures and densities in the north-western boreal lands

Open Access•Enoch Ofosu, Kevin Bradley Dsouza et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

The boreal forest is a vital carbon sink. Using 250 year simulations for Canada’s Taiga Plains, a priority of the 2 billion trees program, we tested afforestation and reforestation (A/R) strategies that combine species mix, planting density and surface albedo. Medium-density (600–1400 trees ha −1 ) mixed stands with ∼25%–40% deciduous trees stored 15%–30% more net ecosystem carbon than conifer monocultures by coupling rapid early growth with long…

  • Climate cooperation in the shadow of solar geoengineering

    Todd L Cherry, Stephan Kroll et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 27

As international efforts to mitigate greenhouse gases continue to fall short of global targets, the scientific community increasingly debates the role of solar geoengineering in climate policy. Given the infancy of these technologies, the debate is not yet whether to deploy solar geoengineering but whether solar geoengineering deserves consideration and research funding. Looming large over this discussion is the moral hazard conjecture – normaliz…

  • Balancing climate and development goals

    Open Access•Lei Duan, Juan Moreno-Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Decarbonizing the energy system is a major challenge facing the richest countries, whereas provision of energy services is a major challenge facing the poorest countries. What would be the climate consequences if only richer countries focus on decarbonization, and only poorer countries focus on provision of energy services? To address this question, we create future scenarios in which carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions increase according to a histo…

  • The impact of climate change on fertility

Open Access•Gregory Casey, Soheil Shayegh et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

We examine the potential for climate change to impact fertility via adaptations in human behavior. We start by discussing a wide range of economic channels through which climate change might impact fertility, including sectoral reallocation, the gender wage gap, longevity, and child mortality. Then, we build a quantitative model that combines standard economic-demographic theory with existing estimates of the economic consequences of climate chan…

  • Maize and precolonial Africa

    Open Access•Jevan Cherniwchan, Juan Moreno-Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2018•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 29

Columbus's arrival in the New World triggered an unprecedented movement of people and crops across the Atlantic Ocean. We study a largely overlooked part of this Columbian Exchange: the effects of New World crops in Africa. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that the introduction of maize increased population density and slave exports in precolonial Africa. We find robust empirical support for these predictions. We also find little evidence to …

  • Challenges and Opportunities for Integrated Modeling of Climate Engineering

Open Access•Massimo Tavoni, Valentina Bosetti et al.•ARTICLE•SSRN Electronic Journal•2017

  • Will the use of a carbon tax for revenue generation produce an incentive to continue carbon emissions

    Open Access•Rong Wang, Juan Moreno-Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

Integrated assessment models are commonly used to generate optimal carbon prices based on an objective function that maximizes social welfare. Such models typically project an initially low carbon price that increases with time. This framework does not reflect the incentives of decision makers who are responsible for generating tax revenue. If a rising carbon price is to result in near-zero emissions, it must ultimately result in near-zero carbon…

  • Adapting to rates versus amounts of climate change

    Open Access•Soheil Shayegh, Juan Moreno-Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Adaptation is the process of adjusting to climate change in order to moderate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities associated with it. Most adaptation strategies are designed to adjust to a new climate state. However, despite our best efforts to curtail greenhouse gas emissions, climate is likely to continue changing far into the future. Here, we show how considering rates of change affects the projected optimal adaptation strategy. We ground…
