  • What goes up, must come down: Speculation-encouraging institutions and house price cycles across countries

    Open Access•Engelbert Stockhammer, Ben Tippet et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2025•References: 29

Since the Global Financial Crisis, there is a growing literature on the Comparative Political Economy (CPE) of housing, but it has not systematically incorporated boom-bust cycles in house prices. This matters as cycles in house prices are large relative to their trend and the intensity of house price cycles differs across countries. Bringing Minskyan and behavioural theories of endogenous financial cycles to CPE, this article argues that the int…

  • Capital Flows and the Eurozone's North-South Divide

    Open Access•K Köhler•ARTICLE•Politics & Society•2024•Cited by: 1

This article offers a monetary perspective on capital flows and the Eurozone's north-south divide. It argues that finance-centric narratives in comparative political economy rightly emphasize financial instability in the periphery, but that the role of capital flows therein requires clarification. The article draws on post-Keynesian monetary theory, coherent accounting, and balance-of-payments data to make three points. First, the focus on the fi…

  • Estimating Nonlinear Business Cycle Mechanisms with Linear Vector Autoregressions: A Monte Carlo Study

Open Access•K Köhler, Rob Calvert Jump•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2022

The paper investigates how well linear vector autoregressions (VARs) identify endogenous cycle mechanisms and cycle frequencies when the underlying process is a nonlinear limit cycle. We conduct Monte Carlo simulations with five nonlinear models in which cycles are driven by the interaction of two state variables. We find that while linear VARs quantitatively underestimate the strength of the interaction mechanism, they successfully identify the …

  • A history of aggregate demand and supply shocks for the United Kingdom, 1900 to 2016

    Open Access•Rob Calvert Jump, K Köhler•ARTICLE•Explorations in Economic History•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 49

This paper presents a history of aggregate demand and supply shocks spanning 1900 – 2016 for the United Kingdom. Sign restrictions derived from a workhorse Keynesian model are used to identify the signs of those shocks. We compare the 30 largest shocks implied by a vector autoregressive model in unemployment and inflation with the narrative historical record. Our approach provides a new perspective on well-known events in economic history. We hig…

  • Capital flows and geographically uneven economic dynamics: A monetary perspective

    Open Access•K Köhler•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 51

This paper provides a monetary perspective on capital flows and their effects on geographically uneven economic dynamics. Contributing to debates on global imbalances and the international dimension of financialisation, the paper applies heterodox theories of endogenous money creation, asset pricing, and balance sheet fragility to capital flows across regions. Three theoretical claims are made and illustrated through coherent balance-sheet accoun…

  • Growing differently? Financial cycles, austerity, and competitiveness in growth models since the Global Financial Crisis

    Open Access•K Köhler, Engelbert Stockhammer•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2021•Cited by: 21•References: 26

The paper contributes to the recent growth models debate through a cross-country analysis of growth drivers before and after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis (GFC). It argues that the widely used dichotomy of export-led versus (debt-financed) consumption-led growth has lost its usefulness since the GFC. Specifically, identifying growth models through growth contributions can give misleading results when the drivers of economic growth change. The …

  • Retracted: How does financialization affect functional income distribution? A theoretical clarification and empirical assessment

    Open Access•K Köhler, Alexander Guschanski et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2016•References: 8

It is frequently asserted that financialization has contributed to the decline in the wage share. This article provides a theoretical clarification and a systematic empirical investigation. We identify four arguments for why financialization would affect the wage share: (a) a Political Economy approach focusing on the exit options of firms; (b) a mark-up pricing approach stressing the role of financial overhead costs for firms; (c) increased comp…

  • A Late Neolithic Case of Pott's Disease from Hungary: Neolithic Pott's Disease from Hungary

    Open Access•K Köhler, Gy Pálfi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 18

The aim of this study was to present classic bone lesions caused by tuberculosis, as seen in a Late Neolithic–Early Copper Age osteoarchaeological sample deriving from the site of Alsónyék-Bátaszék (the western part of Hungary from the 5th millennium bc). In one particular case of an adult male skeleton, vertebral bodies' destruction, collapse, ankylosis and marked angulation in the lower thoracic and the upper lumbal region of the vertebral colu…

  • Zur Typologie und Stellung von Kulttischchen der Lengyel-Kultur im Mittel- Und Südosteuropäischen Neolithikum

    István Zalai-Gaál, K Köhler et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2010

The authors discuss a group of objects having specific or cultic functions in the late neolithic Lengyel culture, which had formerly been referred to as “lamps”, “clay lamps” or “small clay altars”. These objects have been known from the entire occupation territory of the Lengyel community. However, recent excavations uncovered similar finds in a few graves of the Lengyel cemetery at Alsónyék-Bátaszék, which represent new types of the discussed g…

Two population groups of Jammu and Kashmir (India) — Muslims and Bodhs-have been typed for haptoglobin and for CG and PI subtype polymorphisms. The allele frequencies do not show significant differences between these two populations. HP and GC allele frequencies of Bodhs and Muslims differ considerably from with that observed in other North Indian populations. The PI allele frequencies of Bohds and Muslims differ considerably from those found in …

  • Die Instabilität wortfinaler Alveolarpiosive im Deutschen: Eine elektropalatographische Untersuchung

    Open Access•K Köhler, K J Kohler•ARTICLE•Phonetica•1976

Descriptive autority analyses of continuous texts in German have shown that word-final alveolar plosives are frequently assimilated to following labials and velars. On the basis of illustrative data this experimental investigation deals with the question of whether the alveolar movement is completely eliminated by articulatory control or whether coarticulation arises which involves the preservation of the articulatory gesture without a perceptual…
