  • Creating careers in the kingdom of content. The platform-dependence and platform-ambivalence of digital cultural labour in Norway

Open Access•Ole Marius Hylland, Heidi Stavrum et al.•ARTICLE•Poetics•2024•References: 30

Cultural production is to an increasing degree characterized by digitalization, mediatization, platformization and the use of social media. In this article, we investigate how digital cultural labour is experienced by platform-dependent cultural producers. Based on qualitative in-depth interviews with more than twenty Norwegian content creators, we more specifically analyse how they describe and valuate their products and production, the online c…

  • Artistic careers and crises. How did the pandemic affect Norwegian artists

Per Mangset, Bård Kleppe et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Trends•2023•References: 1

In this paper, we ask how the corona pandemic affected a cohort of former art school students. We have compared our findings with other studies of the consequences of the pandemic for Nordic artists. Most of our informants appeared less negatively affected by the pandemic than predicted by previous studies. None of those who responded said that they had left or considered leaving their professions, and none had experienced a disastrous loss of in…

  • Bridging, nudging and translating

Åsne Dahl Haugsevje, Heidi Stavrum et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The article sheds light on an often neglected group of professionals in creative industries, namely the facilitators who work on a local level in order to support and stimulate individual artists and creative microbusinesses. We discuss what characterises the practices of local facilitators, and how they act in order to ensure legitimacy within different contexts. Based on qualitative interviews and participant observation in Norwegian creative i…

  • Begrunnelser for lokal kreativ næring

    Open Access•Mari T Heian, Johs Hjellbrekke•ARTICLE•Norsk sosiologisk tidsskrift•2017

  • Why are artists getting poorer? About the reproduction of low income among artists

Per Mangset, Mari T Heian et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 6

In the period 2006 to 2013, Norway has experienced a substantial increase in public subsidies to culture as well as a substantial increase in real income growth in general. This paper discusses different explanations for why Norwegian artists’ real artistic income has declined between 2006 and 2013, despite the positive economic development in Norway. We have based the study in particular on two comparable studies on the income and work situation…
