    Open Access•Nienke C J Vervoort, Rebecca N H De Leeuw et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2026

Children spend an average of 50 minutes per day watching films, yet hardly any research focuses on how this can be meaningful for them. This qualitative study sheds light on whether watching films could lead to novel insights about life. Fifty-five Dutch children aged 7–12 years participated in duo interviews after watching the Disney film Moana (2016), a coming-of-age film that portrays character strengths and includes societally relevant messag…

As films are omnipresent in children’s lives nowadays, this qualitative study examined how exactly film stories can inspire children to apply character strengths. Fifty-two c…

  • Behind the policy frontline in the Netherlands during the Corona crisis

Open Access•Moniek Buijzen, Doeschka J Anschutz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2021

From the onset of the Corona crisis, a specific policy challenge was identified in the Netherlands: How to motivate young people to adhere to the behavioral measures, such as physical distancing? Young people have an important role to play in stopping the virus from spreading, but they may be more difficult to reach and less motivated and able to adhere to the guidelines than adults. Mid-March, Moniek Buijzen was invited to consult the behavioral…

  • Children's Responses to Negative News

    Open Access•Mariska Kleemans, Rebecca N H De Leeuw et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2017

For a well-functioning democracy, it is crucial that children consume news. However, news can elicit overly negative emotions and discourage engagement in children. The question, therefore, is how news can be adapted to children’s sensitivities and needs but can still inform them. This study investigated whether constructive reporting (solution-based narratives including positive emotions) in news about negative events improved emotional response…

  • Introducing positive media psychology to the field of children, adolescents, and media

    Open Access•Rebecca N H De Leeuw, Moniek Buijzen•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2016

The field of children, adolescents, and media has predominantly focused on harmful media effects, for instance, concerning the potential harm of media violence.
