    Open Access•Steffanie Scott, Arthur Conacher•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2008

Land Degradation and Poverty was the theme of a ten-day study tour and workshop held in February 2006 in north central Vietnam's Nghe An Province, about 300 km south of Hanoi. The study tour was organised jointly by the International Geographical Union's Commission on Land Degradation (COMLAND), Vinh University, and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development. Bringing together 14 foreign particip…

  • Integrated, Regional, Natural Resource and Environmental Planning and the Natural Heritage Trust Phase 2

    Megan Farrelly, Arthur Conacher•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 17

Since 2002, the Australian Natural Heritage Trust Phase 2 (NHT2) has required community groups seeking funds for natural resource management projects to have developed nationally accredited regional strategies and investment plans. This case study reports on the progress of one such regional (and sub-regional) group, examining in particular the perceptions of the community group members and other stakeholders of the overall process. Through inter…

  • The effects of The Quesungual Agroforestry System of western Honduras on soil macrofauna

    Open Access•Natasha Pauli, Edmundo Barrios et al.•ARTICLE•Sociedade & natureza•2005•References: 1

Agricultural practices that promote increased diversity and abundance of soil macrofauna may improve soil quality and productivity, due to the influence of soil macrofauna on organic matter breakdown, nutrient cycling and soil structure.Southern Lempira department in Honduras is an environment where farmers could benefit greatly from such an increase in soil quality. The landscape is hilly, with steep slopes and shallow soils that are susceptible …

  • A Role for Geomorphology in Integrated Catchment Management

    Open Access•Arthur Conacher•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•2002•Cited by: 1

Catchments (watersheds) are integrated through water movements. Water moves sediments; and the translocation of materials has geomorphic and pedological responses. Fertiliser and pesticide residues and other toxic substances are also transported by water, in solution and attached to sediment particles, affecting various ecological components of catchments. The insertion of pollutants is directly caused by land‐use practices. In turn, land uses ar…

  • Erosion of Access Tracks in Kalamunda National Park, Western Australia

    Paul Gager, Arthur Conacher•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Construction of access tracks in national parks and other reserves in the south-west of Western Australia is an essential feature of park management. However, their construction was often carried out with little or no appreciation of soil and slope characteristics and potential erodibility, or the effect of slope and stream sedimentation on terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna. This paper reports on the findings of a study carried out in Kalam…

  • Environmental quality indicators

    Arthur Conacher•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1998•References: 1

Environmental or land quality indicators are being developed internationally as a means whereby the ‘State of the Environment’ (SoE) can be assessed and trends monitored. In Australia, the use of indicators in SoE reporting is in its early stages of development. Indicators have been developed, in relation to agriculture, for flora and fauna, soil, chemical contamination, surface waters and groundwater. Internationally, the World Bank has listed ‘…

  • Water quality and forests in Southwestern Australia

    Arthur Conacher, A J Conacher•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•1979•Cited by: 6

Water restrictions imposed during 1977 have focused attention on the adequac of Perth's water supply. However the deterioration of water quality through increasing salinizauon is at least as serious a problem, both now and in the future. Maintenance of a healthy forest cover, to which fresh water catchments are restricted, is crucial. But forests are being depleted by a range of causes, of which intensive forestry practices are one of the most im…
