  • Lithic technological transition in MIS3 revealed by the lithic assemblages of Liujia Locality 2, Central China

Open Access•Zhe Dong, Sheng-Yan Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Liujia Locality 2, located at Central China, is a Paleolithic site with two cultural units. The luminescence dating results revealed that the lower unit ranges from MIS7 or 6 to MIS5, and the upper unit corresponds to MIS3. The lower cultural unit is characterized by heavy duty tools on large flakes of quartzite and quartz sandstone. In the upper cultural unit, rhyolitic tuff became the preferential raw material, and was used to produce small too…

  • What Is the Acheulean

    Open Access•Marie-Hélène Moncel, Carolina Cucart-Mora et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2026

The Acheulean represents the longest cultural period known to human history, lasting globally for more than 1.75 million years. It may have emerged as early as 1.95 Ma in Africa, spreading throughout much of the continent and then into Eurasia and lasting up to 350–200 ka in western Europe and South Asia, and even later in eastern Asia. Originally defined in the 1870s, the term Acheulean is one of the earliest and most contested classifications i…

Open Access•Mingjie Yi, Xing Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 28

Scholars have long debated when the Neolithic began in China. Neolithisation, however, is a process rather than an event. It is more realistic to investigate the timing and nature of the socio-economic trajectory from mobile, microblade-using foragers to sedentary communities during the Palaeolithic-Neolithic transition in northern China. Here, the authors use artefacts from Shuidonggou locality 12 to demonstrate the socio-economic organisation o…
