  • Strategies for 14 C Dating the Oxtotitlán Cave Paintings, Guerrero, Mexico

Open Access•Jon Russ, Mary Pohl et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 18

Oxtotitlán Cave paintings have been considered among the earliest in Mesoamerica on stylistic grounds, but confirmation of this hypothesis through absolute dating has not been attempted until now. We describe the application of advanced radiocarbon strategies developed for situations such as caves with high carbon backgrounds. Using a low-temperature plasma oxidation system, we dated both the ancient paint and the biogenic rock coatings that cove…

  • Early Agriculture in the Maya Lowlands

    Open Access•Mary Pohl, Mary D Pohl et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•1996•Cited by: 130•References: 40

Wetland research in northern Belize provides the earliest evidence for development of agriculture in the Maya Lowlands. Pollen data confirm the introduction of maize and manioc before 3000 B.C. Dramatic deforestation, beginning ca. 2500 B.C. and intensifying in wetland environments ca. 1500-1300 B.C., marks an expansion of agriculture, which occurred in the context of a mixed foraging economy. By 1000 B.C. a rise in groundwater levels led farmers…

  • Ritual Continuity and Transformation in Mesoamerica: Reconstructing the Ancient Maya Cuch Ritual

    Open Access•Mary Pohl•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1981•Cited by: 34•References: 30

The use of ethnohistoric and ethnographic data in interpreting evidence for prehistoric ritual activity is highly controversial in Mesoamerican circles. This paper traces the long history of a Maya ceremony identified as the cuch rite. Although transformations in characters and symbols have occurred, continuity is also evident. Application of the ethnohistorical approach has suggested that a large corpus of ancient art depicts fertility and acces…
