Mental health self-stigma moderates the effect of social support on depression, anxiety and stress among young adult Pacific Islanders
Objectives: In the United States, Pacific Islanders have a high documented prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress yet report low use of mental health services. Little is known about their risk and protective factors against psychological distress, such as self-stigma and social support. The aim of the current study was to investigate how perceived levels of social support and levels of self-stigma moderate mental health outcomes (depressio…
Biological Age Mediates the Effects of Perceived Neighborhood Problems on Heart Failure Risk Among Black Persons
Distinct moderating pathways for psychosocial risk and resilience in the association of neighborhood disadvantage with incident heart failure among Black persons
This study supports optimism as a source of resilience to the detrimental effects of neighborhood disadvantage on HF risk. Population-level strategies to promote sociocultural antecedents to optimism may serve as a viable method of reducing the disproportionate burden of HF among NH Black persons
Community-Based Recruitment Strategies for Young Adult Pacific Islanders into a Randomized Community Smoking Cessation Trial
Community-based participatory research approaches not only inform the design of culturally tailored intervention recruitment material and strategies, but also result in innovative solutions to recruitment challenges to address the National Cancer Institute's gaps in science regarding small populations
The Relationship of Neighborhood Disadvantage, Biological Aging, and Psychosocial Risk and Resilience Factors in Heart Failure Incidence Among Black Persons
Findings support the necessity for multilevel interventions simultaneously addressing neighborhood and individual psychosocial risk in the reduction of HF among Black persons
Working Memory and Response Inhibition Effects on At-Risk Youth’s Willingness to Use Multiple Nicotine and Tobacco Products
Purpose: Past research has suggested that executive functions, such as working memory and response inhibition, predict the use of nicotine and tobacco products (NTPs). The current study extends prior research by assessing whether response inhibition and working memory are associated with at-risk youth’s willingness to use NTPs. Methods: A sample of 1060 at-risk youth were recruited from alternative high schools in southern California. Participant…
Access and utilization of mental health services among Pacific Islanders
The Effect of E-cigarette Commercials on Youth Smoking
Objectives: In this study, we assessed whether commercials for electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) influence the use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and cigars among high-risk youth in southern California. Methods: We recruited students (N = 1060) from 29 alternative high schools into a prospective cohort study. We used multilevel Poisson regression models to examine whether exposure to e-cigarette commercials and perceptions of their appeal predic…
Executive function and probabilities of engaging in long-term sedentary and high calorie/low nutrition eating behaviors in early adolescence
Development of an Online Smoking Cessation Curriculum for Pacific Islanders
Use of CBPR is critical in the development of the curriculum because it allowed for the sharing of ideas and knowledge between academics and community members
Self-regulation interventions to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in adolescents
