Investigating language and inequality in a seemingly equal educational context
In this article, we reflect on criticality in contemporary inequality research through a discussion of the significance of marginalising class discourses in Denmark to the everyday schooling experience of a group of high school students. The article is based on an investigation of how language, class and educational success are linked in public as well as more local discourses among teachers and students in a provincial Danish high school. Based …
Human, smartphone and territories of the self
Introduction: Digital technology as human experience
Media panic, medical discourse and the smartphone
This article investigates a space of upset related to the smartphone with its communicative affordances and implications. The notion of moral panic can be seen as a way of conceptualizing spaces of upset and their discursive frames. Informed by this concept and accounts of the panic discourses particularly directed at media, I examine the upset articulated in Danish media panic discourses, which grants authority from a medical perspective. In add…
Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy, Moral Ambiguity, and Social Technologies
This article investigates hip hop activists within different organizational structures and their approach to hip hop as cultural form in itself, their cultural assumptions and educational ideologies as well as their relationship to institutional education, the music market and the citizen formation related to the Danish state's integration projects. We argue that while hip hop has certainly proven to be a fruitful alternative to traditional educa…
Ghetto language' in Danish mainstream rap
Language learning, polylanguaging and speaker perspectives
Sociolinguists have recently suggested a range of new terms to re-conceptualise language and language use. Most of these are based on the empirical documentation of speakers using linguistically hybrid constructions which are understood as reflecting speakers’ orientation to norms of linguistic hybridity. In this article we bring data typical of SLA research and sociolinguistic theorisation together by discussing data collected among Swiss German…
Sociolinguistics in a languagised world: Introduction
The idea that there exist separate, enumerable languages has in the last decades been widely criticised, and it has led scholars to propose various new terms and concepts such as ‘polylingualism’, ‘metrolingualism’, and ‘translanguaging’, among others. As these terms are attracting considerable acclaim within the academy, this paper argues it is time to reflect on their occurrence, provenance and pertinence for future research and theorisation. W…
“You shouldn’t sound like an uneducated person”: Linguistic diversity and standard ideology in Denmark
Fighters, Girls and Other Identities: Sociolinguistics in a Martial Arts Club
This book examines how youths at a martial arts club in an urban setting participate and interact in a recreational social community. The author relates analyses of their interactions to discussions of relevance to the sociology of sports, anthropology and education, ultimately providing an analytically nuanced contribution to the field
Standard language in urban rap - Social media, linguistic practice and ethnographic context
High" and "low" in urban Danish speech styles
This article approaches on-going sociolinguistic processes in Copenhagen by focusing on the overt metalinguistic activities of a group of adolescents. The article sheds light on how social power differences are refracted in the metalinsguistic activities of these adolescents in spite of the relatively homogenous (or hegemonic) sociolinguistic conditions of Danish society. In the article, I investigate how social status relations understood as cul…
Un Deux Trois – Speak English! Young Taekwondo-Fighters’ Identity Construction Through Linguistic Competition
From an ethnographic and interaction analytical approach this paper examines how polylingual languaging is used by a group of young male Taekwondo fighters to construct an integrated streetwise and ‘schoolwise’ persona as well as negotiate regional identities. The data discussed were collected in a Taekwondo club in a multicultural area of Copenhagen stereotypically associated with socially underprivileged youth. The analysis focuses on parts of …
