Translating Controversy
This study examines how translators exercise political agency to bolster revisionist perspectives on Japanese military “comfort women.” It analyzes five trans-editing techniques identified in ten excerpts from the first Korean compilation of J. Mark Ramseyer's works on the comfort women issue. The findings indicate that these techniques were strategically employed to defend Ramseyer and to enhance the argumentative power of his claims in the soci…

Radical feminist translations and strategies
In South Korea, a recent wave of feminism has brought about substantial changes in the book industry. Many publishing houses have expanded their list of feminism-related titles to cater for a growing number of women readers who seek awareness-raising. In addition, small-scale ventures dedicated to feminist publishing emerged to serve as a new platform for feminist activism. Among these ventures is Yeolda Books, a radical feminist publisher that o…
In Search of an Ideal Sijo (時調) Format in English
This study undertakes a thorough examination of Kevin O’Rourke’s (1939– 2020) translations of sijo (時調), with a particular emphasis on the form of the traditional Korean poetry. The study has a four-fold purpose. First, it explores O’Rourke’s five-line format for rendering the traditional sijo into English. To illustrate distinctive features of this format, I compare his rendition of Hwang Chini’s sijo “Tongjit tal kinagin pam ŭl” (동짓달 기나긴 밤을) wi…
Translators, translations, and paratexts in South Korea’s gender conflicts
In recent years, South Korea has witnessed an unprecedented wave of feminism. Many women have staged demonstrations against deep-seated patriarchal practices and attacked men's sexuality online in a provocative way. In addition, they have avidly read a wide range of feminist books and shared their gendered experiences in various internet forums. Against this backdrop, this study aims to show how translations and paratexts have been shaped, receiv…

The article aims to show how interpreter trainers holistically grade student performances. For this purpose, experimental rating sessions were held for four undergraduate interpreter trainers. The raters were asked to think aloud their quality judgments while holistically assessing six recordings of consecutive interpretation. Their concurrent verbal reports, along with reflective reports, interview transcripts, and video recordings of computer s…
Shifts in Characterization in Literary Translation
Characterization (i.e., the way a character is lexicogrammatically constructed in a text) introduces and develops the reader’s mental representation of the character. Previous research shows that in fiction various means of characterization have been used to encode the character’s views of the world, the relationship between characters, and the underlying theme of the story. Considering the importance of characterization in fiction, this study ai…
University students’ experience of ‘scale-referenced’ peer assessment for a consecutive interpreting examination
Despite the importance of peer assessment in interpreter education, little is known about how peer assessment is experienced by interpreting students. This case study aims to explore how undergraduate students feel about their scale-referenced, peer assessment activities in/for an interpreting examination. For this purpose, three Korean undergraduate students’ self-reports of what they experienced in a scale-referenced summative peer assessment p…
Developing an analytic scale for assessing undergraduate students’ consecutive interpreting performances
This article reports on the process of developing an analytic rating scale for assessing undergraduate students’ consecutive interpreting performances. The development process was divided into three phases. First, a total of 42 criteria for interpreter performance assessment were identified from the related literature and grouped into three categories: ‘content’, ‘form’ and ‘delivery’. Second, these criteria were rated by importance in a question…
