What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Credibility? Refugee Appeals in Italy
This chapter focuses on the first level of appeal in the Italian refugee status determination procedure. I use the “credibility issue” as a lens through which to observe how this notion is employed at the tribunals of Bologna and Turin, simultaneously as a core issue in the determination procedure, a sensitive category to handle with care, and an almost-empty shell used for purposes stretching out far beyond the tribunals themselves. Such purpose…
The Location of Truth: Bodies and Voices in the Italian Asylum Procedure
This article analyzes the role increasingly played by oral testimony in asylum procedures in the years 2011-2013, when the "Arab spring" and the war on Libya caused a sudden increase in the number of migrants entering Italy, as well as a peak in rejections. Drawing from ethnographic cases, I suggest that in Italy this shift was based on assumptions about the scientific objectivity and neutrality of interviewing and translation techniques. I argue…
The scripts of Alberto Pollera, an Italian officer in Colonial Eritrea: Administration, ethnography and gender
This chapter focuses on non-academic ethnographies produced during Italian colonial rule in Eritrea. It analyzes early Italian colonial experience and its ethnographic production by focusing on Alberto Pollera, an Italian colonial officer who became a self-made ethnographer, living almost his entire adult life in Eritrea and Ethiopia. The chapter also focuses on Pollera's early ethnographic works produced between 1902 and 1922 concerning aspects …
Place in the Sun: Africa in Italian Colonial Culture from Post-Unification to the Present
Given the centrality of Africa to Italy's national identity, a thorough study of Italian colonial history and culture has been long overdue. Two important developments, the growth of postcolonial studies and the controversy surrounding immigration from Africa to the Italian peninsula, have made it clear that the discussion of Italy's colonial past is essential to any understanding of the history and construction of the nation. This collection, th…
Defending the race’: The Italian reinvention of the Hottentot Venus during Fascism
In 1938 the regime's popular periodical La Difesa della Razza published the portrait of Saartjie Baartman (a Khoisan woman known to the western world as 'The Hottentot Venus') to discourage miscegenation in the empire of Italian East Africa. But by 1938, Italian public and scientific interest in the Hottentot Venus had long faded away. In addition, readily available photographs of Italo-Eritreans could have been used to show the 'outcome' of misc…
