  • U.S. adolescents’ critical race digital literacy skills: Demographic variables and learning opportunities as contributing factors

Open Access•T Mcgee, Matthew Coopilton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children and Media•2026

This manuscript examines whether demographic factors and learning opportunities predict critical race digital literacy (CRDL) task performance among U.S. adolescents. Data come from the National Survey of Critical Digital Literacy, where 11–19-year-old adolescents’ CRDL skills were assessed through their responses to real-life, contemporary examples of race-related digital media (N = 1138). We found white participants performed significantly lowe…

  • Sexual and gender minority identity, peer victimization, and suicidality in adolescents: A mediation study using the ABCD Study

Open Access•Sen Liu, Diana English et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth are more susceptible to suicidal ideation and attempts compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Yet, it is unclear how interpersonal and online victimization experiences account for the elevated suicide risks in this population. This study investigates the extent of peer and cyber victimization among SGM youth and its contribution to their higher risks of suicidal ideation and attempts…

  • Racial-ethnic differences in adolescents’ daily enactment of critical race digital literacy skills: A daily diary study

    Open Access•Avriel C Epps, Avriel Epps et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2025•References: 12

Internet studies researchers have shown that Black participants on social media platforms often drive the development and culture of these platforms through dynamic production, analysis, and critique of race-related digital media. However, little education research has been done on how adolescents in general – including Black adolescents – learn the skills involved in these activities. Through analyzing data from the nationally representative Nat…

  • Trends in Suicidality and Bullying among New York City Adolescents across Race and Sexual Identity: 2009–2019

Open Access•Diana English, Elizabeth Kelman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2024•References: 2

Despite evidence showing rising suicidality among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) and Black adolescents, separately, there is scant research on suicide risk trajectories among youth groups across both racial and sexual identities. Thus, we examined trajectories of self-reported suicidal ideation and attempt and their associations with bullying among New York City-based adolescents. We analyzed 2009-2019 NYC Youth Risk Behavior Survey data. We ra…

Adolescents’ heavy engagement with digital news and social media brings them considerable exposure to race-related content, especially during election cycles. We assess how well young people navigate that kind of digital content, using a nationally representative longitudinal study in which baseline data was collected during and after the 2020 election. We categorize young people’s responses to two real-life examples of digital media related to p…

Researchers are increasingly recognizing the importance of studying and addressing intersectional stigma within the field of HIV. Yet, researchers have, arguably, struggled to operationalize intersectional stigma. To ensure that future research and methodological innovation is guided by frameworks from which this area of inquiry has arisen, we propose a series of core elements for future HIV-related intersectional stigma research. Transgender individuals face severe stigma-driven health inequities structurally, institutionally, and interpersonally, yielding poor individual-level outcomes. Implications for our conceptual understanding of discrimination and teasing during adolescence are discussed
