  • Layers of Variation

Open Access•Elli Bleeker, Bram Buitendijk et al.•ARTICLE•Digital humanities quarterly•2022

The article describes research into the automatic comparison of texts with revisions. The authors argue that in-text variation can best be modelled as nonlinear text, and that a collation tool needs to treat in-text variation differently from the way linear text is treated. They describe in detail how the modelling choices they made influence the development of HyperCollate, a collation software that is able to process TEI-XML transcriptions of t…

  • Reconstructing collaborative (self-)translations from the archive

Open Access•Pim Verhulst, Olga Beloborodova et al.•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2021•References: 21

When literary authors translate their own work, they sometimes collaborate with other writer-translators. While such “collaboration” is often acknowledged on the title pages of the resulting publications, the nature of each joint venture is typically very different in practice. Surviving archival traces often allow for a more detailed reconstruction of the varying working methods that were adopted for every co-translation, but it would be naïve t…

  • Sheherazade's Notebook

    Open Access•Dirk Van Hulle•ARTICLE•Modernist Cultures•2020•References: 1

Critical editions of ‘Complete Works’ are typically organized in a teleological manner, using each of the author's published works as an endpoint. In addition to this useful tradition, this article suggests a ‘dysteleological’ approach. The term ‘dysteleology’, indicating that evolution has no inherent goal, was coined in the years leading up to Modernism. The existence of vestigial organs served as an example to corroborate the ‘dysteleological’…

  • Hypertext and Avant‐Texte in Twentieth‐Century and Contemporary Literature

Open Access•Dirk Van Hulle•OTHER•A Companion to Digital Literary…•2013

Twentieth-century and contemporary literature are characterized by an increased attention to the writing process as an inherent part of the written product. The modernist attempts to convey the experience of time and space resulted in formal experiments that may be regarded as proto-hypertexts. The intrinsically hypertextual structure of literary geneses consisting of blocks of text that are shuffled around during the writing process indicates ho…

  • Narrative across Versions

    Lars Bernaerts, Dirk Van Hulle•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 18

What can narrative theory and analysis learn from the study of sketches, notes, and manuscripts? Leading narratologists, such as Dorrit Cohn, Gérard Genette, and Franz K. Stanzel, have visited the factory of the text, as Genette calls it, to corroborate an argument about the nature of narrative in general or the composition of a particular narrative. However, these excursions have not led to a principled dialogue between genetic criticism and nar…

  • La genèse de L'Innommable

    Dirk Van Hulle•ARTICLE•Littérature•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 5
