  • Democracy against Development

    Jeffrey Witsoe•BOOK•Democracy Against Development•2013

Hidden behind the much-touted success story of India's emergence as an economic superpower is another, far more complex narrative of the nation's recent history, one in which economic development is frequently countered by profoundly unsettling, and often violent, political movements. In Democracy against Development, Jeffrey Witsoe investigates this counternarrative, uncovering an antagonistic relationship between recent democratic mobilization …

  • Caste and democratization in postcolonial India

    Jeffrey Witsoe•ARTICLE•Democratization•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 7

This article examines the case of lower-caste politics in the populous north Indian state of Bihar in order to show the ways in which the liberal democratic model fails to capture the realities of democracy in postcolonial India. In order to explain the rise of lower-caste politics, I examine the ways in which relationships between state institutions, caste networks and locally dominant groups shape contemporary political possibilities, necessita…

  • Rethinking Postcolonial Democracy

    Open Access•Jeffrey Witsoe•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2011•Cited by: 21•References: 31

With this article, I seek to contribute to an anthropological understanding of democracy through an examination of the politics of lower-caste empowerment in Bihar, a populous state in north India. I argue that democracy has to be examined within the context of historical processes that have shaped the larger political economy within which democratic practice unfolds, revealing the specificities of India's postcolonial democracy. Caste as politic…

  • Corruption as power

    Open Access•Jeffrey Witsoe•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2011•Cited by: 47•References: 24

In this article, I examine the ways in which a politics of caste empowerment that became central to democratic politics in much of north India in the early 1990s altered the ways in which the state was popularly imagined. Many people began to perceive state institutions as inherently corrupt sources of political patronage that, having long served to perpetuate upper-caste dominance, could now be used in the same way by a new class of political le…

  • Territorial Democracy

    Open Access•Jeffrey Witsoe•ARTICLE•PoLAR Political and Legal…•2009•Cited by: 14•References: 18

This article examines the relationship between caste identities and electoral democracy in India. Drawing from fieldwork in Bihar, I suggest that at the center of what is popularly referred to as "caste politics" is the influence of local relations of dominance and subordination on electoral practice, resulting in what I refer to as "territorial democracy." The article examines how a politics of caste empowerment has challenged a long history of …
