The “Sensory Beyond” and the local Zwischenraum on the Yugoslav-Hungarian Border
This article deals with the phenomenon of physical isolation of space, whereby the isolated space is nevertheless accessible to the human senses.Using the example of a Cold War border section between Yugoslavia and Hungary, which was materially equipped to isolate the national territories from each other, it is shown how the senses in the local environment along the border played an important role in the perception and formation of ideas about th…
Priseljence proučujeta skozi kontrastne vpetosti v ekonomijo in zanje predlagata analitični kategoriji »menedžerji« in »podjetniki«. S prvimi povežeta lokalno umeščanje na podlagi proizvodnih obratov slovenskih podjetij na Kitajskem…
The positive face of the young entrepreneur: The hegemonic process of social innovation in Slovenia
Neoliberal political economy, which places entrepreneurship at the centre of human well-being, sees the potential of young people as self-reliant entrepreneurs capable of relieving the capital and state of the burden of social welfare. This paper examines the process of the establishment of young entrepreneurs in Slovenia during the neoliberal economic and political transition, and as a reaction to the 2010s economic crisis. The paper shows how e…

Asymmetric Wildlife in the Goričko Nature Park: Protecting (from) Species
This paper presents an asymmetry of meanings and values that different human agents who occupy the same geographical space ascribe to distinct wildlife species. This asymmetry is the result of these agents' roles in the area and their contrasting epistemologies. The agents in question comprise the Goričko Nature Park as a conservation institution and inhabitants of the park, especially farmers. In most parks, the relationship between professional…
“They Feed Here and Live There”: Borderwork with Wildlife in Slovenia’s North-East Corner
This paper explores how wildlife’s purposeful migrations across the Hungarian-Slovenian border engenders relations between nonhumans and humans and stimulates people’s borderwork activities. Following a lead from Stef Jansen’s argument about the incompatibility of symmetrical and asymmetrical treatment of humans and nonhumans, the author performs a two-step analysis of animals’ involvement in borderwork
Making Music as Home-Making: Bosnian Refugee Music and Collaboration in Post-Yugoslav Slovenia
This article explores some of the musical practices of Bosnian refugees in post-Yugoslav Slovenia in the mid-1990s and aims to improve understandings of music in transit and in precarious times. In particular, the article traces the effects of common Yugoslav history on the popularisation of Sevdalinka in Slovenia and the efforts of refugee and local musicians to make a new home together after the breakup of Yugoslavia
The Ecosystem Ideal and Local Neoliberalism of the Young Entrepreneur. The Millennials’ Entrepreneurial Environment in Slovenia
This paper is about the young entrepreneur as an emerging social agent in contemporary Slovenia.Young entrepreneurs are affected by both an ideal sociality of entrepreneurial ecosystems and the small scale of their environment. This paper argues that while the former is promoted as a tool for strengthening local communities and a means of moving toward a prosperous future, the later prevents its actualization but provides security for young people…
Knowledge of Place in Three Popular Music Representations of the First World War
This article explores three recent representations of the First World War -specifically of the Isonzo Front -in Slovenian popular music. It considers the works of Rodoljubac, Bakalina, and Bratko Bibi. These musicians and music collectives share a connection to the historical region of the Isonzo Front. The article investigates how these musicians' knowledge of place informed their compositions. Four ways of knowing a place are identified, distri…
Gender and Music-Making in Exile: Female Bosnian Refugee Musicians in Slovenia
This article explores the role of Bosnian refugee women in the music-making and organisational activities of two refugee bands (Dertum and Vali) in Slovenia in the early 1990s. Endorsing the ideas about the transformative power of art and looking beyond the dominant identitarian doxa that views music-making in exile as simply the preservation of the ethnic/national identity in a new context, the article places particular emphasis on the active ro…
Hallucinating the Slovenian Way: The Myth of Salamander Brandy, an Indigenous Slovenian Psychedelic Drug
Mass media have made drugs a common theme in everyday news. However, in the mid 1990&s;s the story of an &s;autochthonous Slovenian hallucinogenic drug&s; broke out of the usual media routine and became an especially popular topic of conversation among youth in Slovenia. For youth immersed in various forms of popular culture, drugs are part of the everyday, at least as a narrative. To the national heritage of peasant alcohol distillation was thus…
Sevdah Celebrities Narrate Sevdalinka. Political (Self-)Contextualization of Sevdalinka Performers in Bosnia-Herzegovina
The article explores sevdalinka as regional musical genre that represents contradictory ideological positions. The focus is on the various celebrities’ discourses with obvious political connotations that have been productive in the making of sevdalinka in past and present Bosnian-Herzegovinian contexts. *** V članku avtorja razkrivata nasprotujoče si ideološke pozicije, kakor se zrcalijo v regionalnem glasbenem žanru – sevdalinki. V središče zani…
The Sevdalinka in Exile, Revisited: Young Bosnian Refugees’ Music-Making in Ljubljana in the 1990s (A Note on Applied Ethnomusicology)
Scholars perceived the sevdalinka in exile as an evident expression of refugees’ Bosnian identity. Although this aspect might be important, we think that the identity dimension of the sevdalinka was overemphasised. That is why we point to the appearance of the sevdalinka in Slovenia as a complex process of experiencing uncertainty and trauma of forced migration on the one hand, and youth creativity or a search for expressive freedom on the other.…
Wildlife, Protected Areas, and Recreation in the Natural Environment: Theoretical and Practical Variations with Self-Reflection

Triglav National Park and Recreational Adventurism
Triglavski narodni park je namenjen varovanju narave, obenem pa tudi rekreaciji, ki je zaradi vplivov na okolje podvržena regulaciji. V prispevku so predstavljene strategije različnih skupin športnikov za rahljanje in spreminjanje omejitev, določenih v Zakonu o Triglavskem narodnem parku in nastajajočem načrtu upravljanja. Avtorja s konceptom rekreacijskega avanturizma pojasnjujeta, zakaj je stroga naravovarstvena politika v tem primeru smiselna.…
Dante Alighieri Was Here
The article addresses the question of local identification, proposing that local identification in the contemporary world can be linked to locals' imagining 'their place' as inscribed within wider contexts outlined by symbols with supra-local references, whereby place-centric imaginary geographies emerge. Locals are active producers of symbols linking a place to such geographies. The author discusses the case of Dante Alighieri's alleged stay in …
Some Remarks toward More Social Context in Slovenian Folkloristics
Članek problematizira (ne)upoštevanje družbenega konteksta v sodobni slovenski folkloristiki. Etnografsko se navezuje na primer žganja močeradovca in poulično petje v Tolminu. Teoretsko obravnava koncept folklornega dogodka, komunikacijske vidike folklore in družbeno-kulturni kontekst kot ogrodje razumevanja folklore. *** The article questions the insufficient attention given to social context in contemporary Slovenian folkloristics. Ethnographic…
Festival tourism and production of locality in a small Slovenian town
The article investigates the conditions which contributed to the Slovenian town of Tolmin becoming a 'festival town'. On the basis of a study of a palette of festivals, the distinction is made between festivals which originate outside the area, are designed to make a profit and therefore involve large numbers, and festivals with a background in locality (in reference to Arjun Appadurai, 'locality' is here primarily understood in connection to ide…
