  • Addressing silent distress

    Open Access•Pirjo Markkola•ARTICLE•European Review of History Revue…•2026

The formation of new nation-states after the Great War transformed societies and provided new settings for social policies throughout Europe, including Finland. Finland gained independence in 1917 and suffered from a short but brutal civil war between Whites (government troops) and Reds (socialists) in 1918. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland supported the White winners of the war, although both factions were members of the same church. D…

    Open Access•Johanna Annola, Pirjo Markkola•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2023

In 1911, Finland became one of the last northern European countries to join the ICW. The formation of a national chapter was preceded by an almost twenty-five-year crusade by one woman, Baroness Alexandra Gripenberg, who was the most internationally recognised Finnish feminist of her time. By focusing on her correspondence, this article sheds light on an important chapter in the history of international feminism in Finland. It discusses Gripenber…

  • History of Child Welfare

Johanna Sköld, Pirjo Markkola•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Since the 1990s, an increasing number of inquiries into the history of children’s out-of-home care have shown that child welfare sometimes failed to protect children. In this Special Issue, we explore how the Nordic countries have responded to allegations and scandals of historical child abuse within child welfare, and also how history matters in these political processes. We ask how Nordic societies have acknowledged past historical child abuse …

  • Lutheranism and the Nordic Spirit of Social Democracy

    Open Access•Pirjo Markkola•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2018

Professor Robert H. Nelson has written a thought-provoking book on Lutheranism and the Nordic social democracy. The five Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—are renowned for the long history of Lutheran state churches, on the one hand, and the social democratic welfare states on the other. These two characteristic features of the region are often treated as two separate phenomena of Nordic history. Nelson, however, argu…

  • Focusing on the Family

Pirjo Markkola•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2014

Marriage and family form an intersection in which individuals, churches, and the state are intertwined. Recent debates on legislation in respect of same-sex marriage indicate that family issues are a special area of interest for religious communities.1 This is by no means the first time that churches have attempted to define marriage as an institution and family ethics in general; there is a long history of religious communities both shaping and …

Lutheranism is a dominant feature of the Scandinavian countries or, as they are known in the European context, the Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Church historians recognize the Scandinavian countries for their long tradition of the Evangelical Lutheran State Churches. Strong ties between the church and the state date back to the Middle Ages and, in particular, to the Reformation, which reached Scandinavia in the …
