  • The last empress. Saint Richgard and the end of the Carolingian dynasty

    Racha Kirakosian•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2021

The end of the Carolingian dynasty is often portrayed as the result of the weak reign of Emperor Charles III. His former wife Richgard, with whom he had not produced an heir, became a nun after their divorce. These events did not pass without much controversy: legends tell that the Carolingian empress was forced to prove her virginity by trial by fire after being accused of adultery. • Intertextuelle Textilien: Imaginäre Kleider und Temporalität bei Alanus ab Insulis und Gertrud von Helfta

    Racha Kirakosian•ARTICLE•Beiträge zur Geschichte der…•2020

    This article compares a vision from the ›Legatus divinae pietatis‹ – attributed to Gertrude the Great (c. 1256–1301/1302) – with Alain de Lille’s twelfth-century allegory ›De planctu Naturae‹ (1160/1165). Racha Kirakosian•ARTICLE•Le Moyen Age•2018

Medieval mystical texts are concerned with authenticating the stories they contain. Especially when they are written in a hagiographical tone, validating the ineffable through language becomes essential for the proof of sanctity. The retelling of mystical moments evolving in a visionary space reserved to the mystic, poses particular challenges for the mystical account which is read in a collective environment. The mystical Life of Christina of Ha…

  • Musical Heaven and Heavenly Music: At the Crossroads of Liturgical Music and Mystical Texts

    Racha Kirakosian•ARTICLE•Viator•2017

The following study concentrates on the relationship between liturgy, visionary space, and the theoretical implications of music as cosmological order in the medieval mystical tradition. It examines musical instances in mystical accounts by elucidating the ways in which mystical texts engage with music and dance as something that forms a bridge to the celestial realm. Performance aspects of mystical accounts can be seen as part of a creative rece…
