The article deals with the political and military organization of the former internees in the Italian concentration camp Rab. Although there were only about 2,000 of them at the beginning of September 1943, they managed to disarm the entire Italian military garrison on the island of Rab, which consisted of 2,200 soldiers and carabinieri, partly by cunning and partly by force. It was a unique event in world history, made even more glorious by the …

  • Celebrating the National Unity in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes

    Open Access•B Jezernik•ARTICLE•Łódzkie Studia Etnograficzne•2019

According to Gabriella Elgenius, the societal significance of holidays lies in the preservation of collective memory. Annually repeated shared rituals reinforce the memory of those events and personalities that are expected to be familiar to all the members of the community, in effect pushing all other ones into the shadow of collective forgetting. What is more, the emotionally charged commemorations remind members of the community about their so…

    Open Access•B Jezernik, J Fikfak•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2019•References: 21

The First World War-also known as the Great War, which lasted from 1914 to 1918-left a significant mark on the twentieth century. It radically changed the demographic composition of Europe (about seventeen million people were killed), resulted in the dissolution of four empires (Austria-Hungary, Russia, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire), had a crucial impact on European values, inspired the search for the new man during the interwar period, and ul…

  • Every War Invents Its Heroes

    Open Access•B Jezernik•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2018

The question of the First World War’s purpose and justification was asked by many after the war was over. It was of particular relevance for the citizens of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians, whose (self)questioning and search for historical statements were additionally burdened by the fact that citizens of the new Nation of Three Names had been enemies on the frontlines, fighting on opposite sides of the battle-lines. This uncomfortabl…

One of the greatest, most tragic, and largely overlooked campaigns during the First World War was the Isonzo Front, which ran through an area inhabited by an ethnic Slovenian majority and, in the part along the southern reaches of the Isonzo River, by Italians, Friulians, and Germans. The region was part of the pact between the Triple Entente and Italy, which declared war on Austria-Hungary in 1915. This was a territory that is believed to have b…

The first two public monuments erected in Ljubljana were dedicated to “Father Radetzky,” who was considered a “real national hero” by the Slovenians. However, when Yugoslavia was established as a South Slavic state in 1918, the two monuments dedicated to this vict…

  • Schyłek imperiów i jego skutki na Półwyspie Bałkańskim

    Open Access•B Jezernik•ARTICLE•Łódzkie Studia Etnograficzne•2017

In the Ottoman Empire there was no visible dividing line between secular and religious law. The Ottoman state divided its subjects according to their religion into millets or ‘communities’. Religion was the basis for these divisions; language and ethnological theories played merely a secondary part. The rationale for this state of affairs was the system of government. Ottoman law was a religious code, which could not be imposed on unbelievers, wh…

  • The Red and the Black

    Open Access•B Jezernik•ARTICLE•ЕтноАнтропоЗум/EthnoAnthropoZoom•2016

The red or black colours used to differ between individual days in many calendars are an important aid to organising life in a particular society. The typographical devices used to distinguish days of special importance are instrumental in turning historical events and persons into the images of the nation, which its members can admire, from which they can learn, and–not least–for which they can also fight. The prevailing ideology has a decisive …

While in the main gallery of the museum its plaster cast is exhibited with a note explaining that the original head is currently on permanent loan in the Archaeological Museum of Split, but in the gallery with Roman antiquiti…

In Europe, nineteenth-century historicism, with its conscious association of the past with the present, initiated a veritable flood of public monuments - the cities were literally stuffed full of architectural sculpture and statues. At the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century, Ljubljana was caught up in the winds of change and started to replace its German façade with a Slovene one.
