Methodological advances in polychromy research
This study presents a comprehensive, non-invasive investigation of the polychromy onsculptural fragments from the West Pediment of the Archaic Temple of Apollo atDelphi. Utilizing a multimodal analytical framework, comprising macroscopic X-rayfluorescence (MA-XRF), Raman spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging (HSI), andremote spectral imaging (RSI), the research identifies a sophisticated palette includingcinnabar, Egyptian blue, hematite, goethite,…
Integration of 3D data and multispectral imaging for polychrome clay figurines from Classical and Hellenistic period
The combination of photogrammetry (PG) and multispectral imaging (MSI) techniques is today, more than ever, an important issue for the 3D visualization of colourful clay figurines in a digital environment for cultural heritage professionals. This paper presents a research methodology that integrates 2D photographs derived from visible (VIS) radiation, Ultraviolet-induced Visible Luminescence (UVL) and Visible-induced Luminescence (VIL), into 3D r…
Unveiling the Original Polychromy of Archaic Architecture
The Gigantomachy depicted on the west pediment of the Late Archaic temple of Apollo at Delphi marks a significant milestone in early Greek architectural sculpture. Crafted from porous stone and enhanced with plaster and paint, the surviving fragments differ markedly from the marble figures of the east pediment of the same temple. Among the preserved figures of the Gigantomachy are a standing male figure, possibly representing Apollo or Dionysos, …
“Tomb of the Philosophers” in Pella, Macedonia Revisited
This article discusses the new findings on the iconography of the two figural friezes painted in the interior of the “Tomb of the Philosophers”, an early Hellenistic, monumental, built cist grave, situated in the east cemetery of Pella, Macedonia. A new technical investigation of the tomb’s wall paintings has allowed the revision of older readings of the two friezes. In the lower, main figural frieze new observations pertain to figure characteriz…
Investigating Colors and Techniques on the Wall Paintings of the ‘Tomb of the Philosophers’, an Early Hellenistic Macedonian Monumental Cist Tomb in Pella (Macedonia, Greece)
The ‘Tomb of the Philosophers’, owing its name to the iconographic theme depicted on the interior of its walls, offers a rare example of high-quality early Hellenistic painting, which enhances our knowledge on the use of painting materials and techniques in Greece during the late 4th–early 3rd century BC. The tomb was excavated in 2001 by the 17th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, in the area of the east cemetery of the ancient c…

Macroscopic XRF imaging in unravelling polychromy on Mycenaean wall-paintings from the Palace of Nestor at Pylos
The “lost art” of Archaic Greek painting
In the present work, four wooden panels dated to the second half of the 6th century B.C., discovered in 1934 inside a cave located in Corinthia near the ancient city of Sicyon, are examined. The “Pitsa pinakes” are the oldest known examples of panel painting in ancient Greece. The application of non-invasive and non-contact imaging and analytical techniques (imaging techniques, including infrared-reflected and visible-induced luminescence, micros…
