Space of Transformation
Drawing on a wide range of archives, historical publications, oral history, graphic, audiovisual and web sources, Geert Castryck presents Kigoma-Ujiji as both shaping and being shaped by global transformations. On the surface, the book offers almost two centuries of urban history on Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, close to the Burundian and Congolese borders, in a place that has been a transport hub throughout that time. Beneath the surface,…
Imagining African Unity
Spheres of Life and Scales of Action among Gujarati and Omani Merchants in the African Great Lakes Region, 1920s–1930s
Based on bankruptcy and inheritance files and on population and business registers from Ruanda-Urundi, this paper reconstructs the local and long-distance professional and affective relations of Indian and Arab merchants operating in and around Bujumbura in the two decades before and after the Great Depression (1920s–1930s). The story complements the historiography on Asian diasporas in East Africa by going beyond the Indian Ocean coast, beyond t…
German-African Entangled Histories
Reinventing International Colonialism during a Crisis of Empire
Assessing attempts to revive Belgian-British colonial exchanges in the late 1920s and early 1930s, this paper suggests a refined understanding of the crisis of empire, not so much as a crisis of individual empires (as was the case in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe), but as a crisis of inter-imperial relations and of an underlying imperial order. This becomes apparent when contrasting developments in and between colonies with inter-impe…
Children of the revolution
Histories of decolonization in Africa tend to present a unidirectional process with the eventual independent states as the seemingly natural outcome, thus ignoring or distorting actions and actors with transnational or translocal agendas. In the case of Burundi, decolonization is presented either as national liberation or as a prelude to ethnic conflict within a national frame of reference. Both strands eclipse the initial exclusion of Burundian …
Introduction
Regional distinctions such as “East” and “Central” Africa have been constructed, originally very much from an outsiders’ perspective. Different East and Central African historiographies reflect – and reproduce – these distinctions. However, the inhabitants of those spaces never stopped crossing and entangling them. Likewise, this section approaches East and Central Africa empirically as a space of historical entanglement. Moreover, the authors qu…
Living Islam in Colonial Bujumbura – The Historical Translocality of Muslim Life between East and Central Africa
This article applies a translocal approach in order to make sense of the internal dynamics in the Muslim community of colonial Bujumbura. The establishment of the community and its religious evolutions – from a practical living of Islam to Qadiriyya Sufism to Islamic Reform – are interpreted in regard to, on the one hand, religious tendencies in East African Islam and, on the other hand, processes of integration, marginalization, and exclusion in…
Indian Ocean worlds
This chapter deals with the academic field of Indian Ocean studies. Buddhism and Islam as well as the East India companies and colonial rule, including their respective legal norms, all too some extent created and held together different Indian Ocean worlds. The mobility of people, goods, and ideas in its own right, and migration in particular, are vital for Indian Ocean history. Adopting an Indian Ocean studies perspective makes networks and con…
