Purpose This study investigates the relationship between child gender and a CEO’s top management hiring decisions. Design/methodology/approach Hypotheses were tested using secondary data on 121 S&P 500 male CEOs, their children, and their top management teams. Findings Results indicate that child gender is associated with a male CEO’s TMT hiring decisions. Specifically, we find that male CEOs with only daughters were significantly more likely to …

Unaffordability of Covid-19 tests
COVID-19 testing was associated with a reduction in spending on necessities at varying levels by age. Younger people were more likely to face financial barrier to get tested. Both negative outcomes generated anxiety across all age-groups but more frequently among the younger ones. To reduce age-related inequalities in the affordability of COVID-19 test, these findings support calls for exempting everyone from paying OOP for testing and, removing …
Healthy, Wealthy, Wise, and Happy? Assessing Age Differences in Evaluative and Emotional Well-Being Among Mature Adults from Five Low- and Middle-Income Countries
This study assesses the relationship between age and two dimensions of subjective well-being-evaluative and emotional-among mature adults from five low-and middle-income countries. We use data from the World Health Organization's Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health to contrast the associations of age with subjective well-being when controlling only for gender with the corresponding partial associations when including a richer set of covariate…
Deconstructing Gender Differences in Experienced Well-Being Among Older Adults in the Developing World
Due to declining fertility rates and increasing longevity, the world is growing older. Improving the quality of life of older adults, and not merely preventing deaths, is thus becoming an important objective of public policies. It is, therefore, urgent to understand the key dimensions of older adults' subjective well-being as well as their main drivers. Women represent a large proportion of the older population, and existing evidence suggests tha…

Progress on impoverishing health spending in 122 countries
BACKGROUND: The goal of universal health coverage (UHC) requires that families who get needed health care do not suffer financial hardship as a result. This can be measured by instances of impoverishment, when a household's consumption including out-of-pocket spending on health is more than the poverty line but its consumption, excluding out-of-pocket spending, is less than the poverty line. This links UHC directly to the policy goal of reducing …
Progress on catastrophic health spending in 133 countries
BACKGROUND: The goal of universal health coverage (UHC) requires inter alia that families who get needed health care do not suffer undue financial hardship as a result. This can be measured by the percentage of people in households whose out-of-pocket health expenditures are large relative to their income or consumption. We aimed to estimate the global incidence of catastrophic health spending, trends between 2000 and 2010, and associations betwe…
Measuring financial protection against catastrophic health expenditures
Interpreting comparisons from global monitoring based on a single threshold should be done with caution as these may not provide reliable insight into relative country progress. We therefore recommend financial protection against catastrophic health expenditures be measured across a range of thresholds using a catastrophic incidence curve as shown in this paper. We further recommend evaluating financial protection in relation to a country's healt…
Coping with health‐care costs
In the absence of formal health insurance, we argue that the strategies households adopt to finance health care have important implications for the measurement and interpretation of how health payments impact on consumption and poverty. Given data on source of finance, we propose to (a) approximate the relative impact of health payments on current consumption with a ‘coping’‐adjusted health expenditure ratio, (b) uncover poverty that is ‘hidden’ …
