  • A Twin Study on Perceived Stress, Depressive Symptoms, and Marriage

Open Access•Christopher R Beam, Diana Dinescu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 64

Marriage is associated with reductions in both perceived stress and depressive symptoms, two constructs found to be influenced by common genetic effects. A study of sibling twins was used to test whether marriage decreases the proportion of variance in depressive symptoms accounted for by genetic and environmental effects underlying perceived stress. The sample consisted of 1,612 male and female twin pairs from the University of Washington Twin R…

  • Cultural Sociology of Divorce

Robert E Emery, Robert Emery•BOOK•Cultural Sociology of Divorce•2013

While the formal definition of divorce may be concise and straightforward (legal termination of a marital union, dissolving bonds of matrimony between parties), the effects are anything but, particularly when children are involved. The Americans for Divorce Reform estimates that "40 or possibly even 50 percent of marriages will end in divorce if current trends continue." The authors analyzed data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal investigation of children born to primarily low-income, racial/ethnic minority parents tha…

Yeonok Chung, Robert E Emery et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•2010•Cited by: 5

Divorce rates increased dramatically in South Korea in recent years, raising important questions about possible effects on children. In this study, we compared South Korean early adolescents from divorced and non-divorced families on measures of psychological problems, emotional pain, and parent-child relationships. Early adolescents from divorced families reported more internalizing and lower self-esteem, but not more externalizing. They also en…

  • Church and State in the Early Republic

Open Access•Robert Emery, Robert A Emery•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Religion•2009

Constitutional scholars pay particular attention to the historical context of the First Amendment, to the relationship between the state and religion in the early republic. Missing from this academic examination of church-state history, however, is any serious consideration of the views of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, popularly known as the Covenanters, views that challenged the fundamental presuppositions of the United States Constitution, …

Robert E Emery, Robert Emery•BOOK•Marriage, Divorce, and Children's…•1999

"The research-based book on children and divorce, completely updated with the most recent findings from psychology, sociology, economics, and the law. This second edition presents an integrated, multidisciplinary account of children's experience of divorce including historical, cultural, and detailed demographic perspectives.
