Study trip as means of expanded learning
This article explores the study trip as an interconnected activity of work and play, constituting an extended means of teaching design studio in spatial design related disciplines. This study analyses the case of a cohort of about 200 students involved in a joint project in three cities, Athens, Tokyo and London, where groups were challenged with a common project brief. The students conducted empirical studies of the cities through play and enjoy…
Architectural Generosity: A Preliminary Attempt at a Qualitative Definition
Although in several forms and in different terms, the notion of generosity in architecture has recently received increased attention in contemporary debates, definitions of generosity and its cognates remain sparse and perfunctory, and their connotations generally unclear and in most cases subjective, hinged in the emotional sphere and thus resistant to being measurably related to projects. Moreover, no theoretical framework of architectural gene…
Disquieting presences: The ambiguity and indeterminacy of Maurice Nio’s architecture
In recent years, Dutch architect Maurice Nio has built an array of projects in the Netherlands, which have generally been considered within the spectrum of the Superdutch phenomenon, and more broadly, within Iconic Architecture. Seemingly, to his Dutch colleagues, Nio's work is on the track of liberating architecture from the burden of cultural responsibilities (Ibelings Supermodernism: Architecture in the age of globalization: Nai Uitgevers Pub,…
Visual and Experiential Knowledge in Observational Cinema
This article examines observational filmmaking methods, which have been influential in shaping ethnographic cinema. It offers a theoretical discussion of the techniques of observational filmmaking and their exploratory function, providing an analysis of the general features of observational films. The paper examines observational cinema with respect to the degree of control exerted over the filmmaking process, camera style and editing, the role o…
Documentary Film, Observational Style and Postmodern Anthropology in Sardinia
This article redresses the scholarly marginalization of Sardinian documentaries in standard academic histories of Italian cinema. It is hoped that the analysis offered here will encourage engagement with a territory that has not been extensively researched or investigated. The majority of documentaries about Sardinia verge, or seem to verge, on exoticism. Moreover the prevalence of words often overrides the denotative aspects of the images, reduc…
Where Is the Theory in Visual Anthropology
Is there a real theoretical underpinning for visual anthropology? Or are we just borrowing theoretical concepts, as needed, from other disciplines? Here eight visual anthropologists offer their thoughts on this fundamental question succinctly
The Ethno-Orientalism of the Sardinian ‘Culture’
Drawing on Said, this essay posits an orientalized Sardinia and argues that the regional primitivization of Sardinia derives from its construction via a series of orientalist travelogues. The main argument of the essay is a Saidian reading of Sardinian culture, in which it is maintained that, due to particular historical, geographical and (most interestingly) linguistic factors, Sardinians are particularly enthusiastic participants in the analysi…
Ethnographic film as filmic autobiography: David MacDougall's The Age of Reason
The paper offers a discussion of the problem of autobiography in film. It examines David MacDougall's The Age of Reason (2004) and the way in which this ethnographic film participates in the construction of an embodied visual analysis in which the filmmaker's self is encoded in the material of film. The Age of Reason is the last film in the Doon School project, a series of five films that constitute a video study of a prestigious boys’ boarding s…
Visual anthropology and sensory ethnography in contemporary Sardinia: A film of a different kind
This article reads David MacDougall's Tempus de Baristas (1993) as an instance of the rejection of the didacticism of documentary films driven by the logic of the written text. This ethnographic film about the life of three goat-herders is one of the films that allows the Sardinian-speaking subjects a space and, therefore, a far more prominent role in the total cinematic construction than has usually been the case. Tempus marks the definitive dep…

Homo videns: Televisione e post-pensiero , by Giovanni Sartori
In Homo videns, Giovanni Sartori focuses on how audiovisual media, especially television, affect the functioning of contemporary democracies. In essence, he argues for the possibility of an anthrop
Orientalism in the Documentary Representation of Culture
Structured around the idea that there is a non-linguistic and cross-cultural, possibly biological, basis on which the understanding of pictures rests, this essay looks at the ways whereby images in documentary films challenge the notion of cultural difference. Drawing on Said's Orientalism [1978] and its impact on the basic assumptions of anthropologists, the essay stresses Said's relevance to documentary film theorists, and discusses the work of…
