  • The Unesco World Heritage Convention and Japan’s Pursuit of International Cultural Legitimacy

    M Lincicome•ARTICLE•Japanese Studies•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Between 1993 and 2018, Japan successfully applied to have 18 cultural sites and four natural sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List of places deemed to be of ‘outstanding universal value’ and ‘interest’. At first glance, the former appear as a disparate collection of monuments chosen strictly on the basis of their individual merits, but a closer examination reveals a number are bound together by a common discourse – ‘the Japan as cultu…

  • Principle, Praxis, and the Politics of Educational Reform in Meiji Japan

    M Lincicome•BOOK•Principle, Praxis, and the…•2017

Scholars of modern Japan agree that education played a crucial role in that country's rapid modernization during the Meiji period (1868-1912). With few exceptions, however, Western approaches to the subject treat education as an instrument of change controlled by the Meiji political and intellectual elite. Principle, Praxis, and the Politics of Educational Reform in Meiji Japan offers a corrective to this view. By introducing primary source mater…

  • Japanese Education Reform: Nakasone's Legacy

    M Lincicome, Christopher P Hood•ARTICLE•Journal of Japanese Studies•2002

The Japanese education system has attracted increasing attention over the past 20 years, largely due to the belief that it has been central to Japan's economic growth. Many have felt, however that the system is stunted by an inability, or perhaps even on an incapacity, to change. This study challenges these contentions. It examines the reform policies implemented by Prime Minister Nakasone during the 1980s and argues that, not only has the system…

The literature on nationalism ascribes a pivotal role to schools in creating what Benedict Anderson calls an “imagined community,” through the formation and dissemination of a common national identity and a shared national consciousness where none existed before (e.g., Anderson 1983; Gellner 1983; Hobsbawm 1990; Smith 1991). It is not unusual to find Japan cited as a prime example of this process, not only among theorists of nationalism, but amon…
