  • Dublin's Great Wars

    Open Access•Richard S Grayson•BOOK•Dublin's Great Wars•2018

For the first time, Richard S. Grayson tells the story of the Dubliners who served in the British military and in republican forces during the First World War and the Irish Revolution as a series of interconnected 'Great Wars'. He charts the full scope of Dubliners' military service, far beyond the well-known Dublin 'Pals', with as many as 35,000 serving and over 6,500 dead, from the Irish Sea to the Middle East and beyond. Linking two conflicts …

  • Remembering 1916

Open Access•Guy Beiner, Dominic Bryan et al.•BOOK•Remembering 1916•2016

The year 1916 witnessed two events that would profoundly shape both politics and commemoration in Ireland over the course of the following century. Although the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme were important historical events in their own right, their significance also lay in how they came to be understood as iconic moments in the emergence of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach drawing on his…

  • Military History from the Street

    Open Access•Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•War in History•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Local studies of military service in the First World War have traditionally focused on ‘Pals’ or other units known to be linked to a specific area. However, the availability of new records online has revolutionized the way in which local studies can be carried out. A ‘military history from the street’ approach can now document and analyse service by all those from a local area who served. The article explains how such socio-military methods, as u…

  • The Place of the First World War in Contemporary Irish Republicanism in Northern Ireland

    Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 10

The role of remembrance of the First World War in contemporary Irish republicanism in Northern Ireland, both Official and Provisional, is examined in this article, which places such remembrance in a wider nationalist context. After considering the nature of nationalist engagement in the British army in 1914–1918, and all‐Ireland issues around remembrance, the article focuses on Sinn Féin’s involvement in Somme commemoration in 2002 and 2008. It t…

  • Belfast Boys

    Richard S Grayson•BOOK•Belfast boys•2009

This is the story of men from either side of West Belfast's sectarian divide during the Great War. Richard S. Grayson follows the volunteers of the 36th and 16th divisions who fought on the Somme and side-by-side at Messines, recovering the forgotten West Belfast men throughout the armed forces, from the retreat at Mons to the defeat of Germany and life post-war. In so doing, he tells a new story which challenges popular perceptions of the war an…

  • Social Democracy or Social Liberalism? Ideological Sources of Liberal Democrat Policy

    Open Access•Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 2

Liberal Democrat policy has been labelled as social democratic, yet the party has been reluctant to so describe itself. Taking Crosland's The Future of Socialism as a reference point, there appears to be much shared ground between social democracy and Liberal Democrat policy. Meanwhile, the party's tax policy adopted in 2006 takes the Croslandite approach of taxing wealth rather than income. Despite this, the article argues that the party is a so…

  • Analysing the Liberal Democrats

    Open Access•Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2007

This article sets the scene for those that follow. It picks out the main themes of each, arguing that the Liberal Democrats could benefit from considering the issues around policy and the nature of political power that arise from the articles. It also argues that debates over relations with other parties are likely to be central to Liberal Democrat politics in the foreseeable future

  • Leo Amery's Imperialist Alternative to Appeasement in the 1930s

    Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•Twentieth Century British History•2006•Cited by: 2

Leo Amery has long been seen as one of the leading figures in the anti-appeasement movement. However, key aspects of his case against government foreign policy are not addressed in previous work. This article considers Amery's reputation pointing out that it is problematic to characterize him as an ‘anti-appeaser’ because he did not rule out concessions to Germany and was willing to see Germany dominate Central Europe. However, he differed from t…

  • Imperialism in Conservative Defence and Foreign Policy

    Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2006•References: 7

This article explores the place of imperialism in aspects of Conservative defence and foreign policy between 1903 and 1939, through a comparative study of Leo Amery and the three Chamberlains (Joseph, Austen and Neville), all of whom were nominally imperialists. The article draws conclusions in two general areas. First, it argues that there has not been enough attention to the diversity of imperialist approaches to policy. Exploring the army refo…

  • Change and Continuity in the Liberal Democrat General Election Campaign of 2005

    Open Access•Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2005

This article analyses the Liberal Democrat general election campaign of 2005, with special attention to developments in the party between 2001 and 2005. It argues that there was significant change in policy during that period, towards an agenda emphasising decentralisation and 'tough liberalism'. However, this did not significantly alter the party's overall message from that of 2001, which remained focused on policies such as scrapping university…

  • The liberal party and international affairs, c.1919–1988

    Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•1999•References: 7

This bibliographical article is a survey of the existing literature on the Liberal party's attitudes to international affairs from 1919 until its merger with the Social Democratic party in 1988. In a preliminary section on background material, it covers general works, and those on figures such as Cobden and Gladstone, along with studies of the Boer War and the Great War. In the 1919–39 section, close attention is given to writings on Liberal lead…

  • Mods, Rockers and Juvenile delinquency in 1964

    Richard S Grayson•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This article contributes to the controversial debate on the post‐1945 political consensus in Britain. It examines the government response to the fighting between Mods and Rockers on Bank Holidays in 1964. Analysing the official records of the Home Office and the Cabinet Home Affairs Committee, it shows how the state declined to take drastic measures against this particular form of juvenile delinquency. The article then demonstrates how, throughou…

The opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 was accompanied by the publication of Keith Wilson's study, Channel Tunnel Visions, 1850-1945: Dreams and Nightmares (London 1994).3 This study has filled a major gap, for the extensive government attention to the tunnel question in the interwar period has received little academic attention. Before Wilson, the only detailed published study of government policy at that time was a short article on the 1919-…
