  • Big data analytics. A demographer’s perspective

    Open Access•Guillaume Wunsch, Michel Mouchart•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•2024•References: 7

In the past few years, several demographers have pointed out the need to consider big data in population studies. Some are in favour of data-driven approaches, as statistical algorithms could discover novel patterns in the data. This paper examines some of the methods, both old and new, that have been developed for detecting patterns and associations in the data. It concludes with a discussion on how big data and big data analytics can contribute…

  • Time and causality in the social sciences

    Open Access•Guillaume Wunsch, F Russo et al.•ARTICLE•Time & Society•2022•References: 39

This article deals with the role of time in causal models in the social sciences. The aim is to underline the importance of time-sensitive causal models, in contrast to time-free models. The relation between time and causality is important, though a complex one, as the debates in the philosophy of science show. In particular, an outstanding issue is whether one can derive causal ordering from time ordering. The article examines how time is taken …

  • Causal attribution in block-recursive social systems: A structural modeling perspective

    Open Access•Guillaume Wunsch, Michel Mouchart et al.•ARTICLE•Methodological Innovations•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 29

One method for causal analysis in the social sciences is structural modeling. Structural models, as used in this article, model the (causal) mechanism for a social phenomenon by recursively decomposing the multivariate distribution of the variables of interest. Often, however, one does not achieve a complete decomposition in terms of single variables but in terms of "blocks" of variables only. Papers giving an overview of this issue are neverthel…

  • A stochastic independence approach for measuring regional specialization and concentration

    Open Access•Christian Haedo, Michel Mouchart•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This paper proposes an integrated framework for discussing issues related to regional concentration, sectorial specialization and overall localization by considering these concepts as a row-column association- or non-independence- in a two-way contingency table 'regions × sectors'. This is the approach of stochastic independence, in which the degree of concentration, or of specialization, is measured by discrepancies among distributions: between …

  • Controlling Variables in Social Systems - A Structural Modelling Approach

    Open Access•Michel Mouchart, Guillaume Wunsch et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Determining the variables to be controlled for is usually a major problem in the social sciences when analyzing possible causal relations. A structural modelling approach, having recourse to directed acyclic graphs, is presented here as a consistent framework for determining a coherent set of guidelines when deciding what variables should be controlled. Two rules are developed for determining control variables when studying respectively the direc…

  • Impact of parental ages and other characteristics at childbearing on congenital anomalies: Results for the Czech Republic, 2000-2007

    Open Access•Jitka Rychtarikova, Catherine Gourbin et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 38

While it is widely known that maternal age at childbearing plays a role in the occurrence of Down syndrome, less is known about the effects of maternal age on other major congenital anomalies. Information on the possible effects of other maternal characteristics and of the age of the father is even scarcer

  • Inferring Causality through Counterfactuals in Observational Studies - Some Epistemological Issues

    Open Access•F Russo, Guillaume Wunsch et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 5

  • Do We Necessarily Need Longitudinal Data to Infer Causal Relations

    Open Access•Guillaume Wunsch, F Russo et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Sociological…•2010•Cited by: 13•References: 3

  • Parents’ age at birth of their offspring and child survival

Guillaume Wunsch, Michel Mouchart et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 29

This study presents some new results on parental age as a risk factor for child survival. The study is based on individual registration forms for live births and infant deaths collected in Hungary from 1984 to 1988. Logistic regression models have been fitted for early neonatal and neonatal mortality on the one hand, and post-neonatal mortality on the other hand. Children of older males and females have significantly higher early neonatal and neo…

There are strongly pronounced differentials between survival chances for different social classes in less developed countries. This book gives insight into the variety of factors-biological, social, economic and cultural-associated with these inequalities in mortality rates. Certain of the papers deal with new conceptual approaches and methodological issues, while others cover particular countries in Asia and Latin America, providing overall an i…

The article points out some possible approaches, and several of the difficulties involved. The problem of spatial and serial autocorrelations has to be solved, as well as that of multicollinearity between time-dependent causal variables. One must also avoid ecological fallacies, take account …
